Job Description
Newport News Shipbuilding has an opportunity for a NDT Test Examiner to join their team! This position requires frequent travel to Newport News Shipbuilding suppliers to conduct NDT audits of critical component suppliers. Candidates should have the ability to identify non-compliance issues and effectively communicate to the suppliers’ NDT Test Examiners and senior management.
Trains, examines and certifies nondestructive test (NDT) personnel, ensuring that NDT personnel are competent and qualified to perform the applicable tests in conformance with Company and contractual requirements. Provides technical support to resolve technical issues, as well as the development, interpretation, adaptation, qualification and implementation of specifications, procedures, processes, etc. Approves NDT procedures and workmanship standards, and ensures the adequacy of the program. Develops and administers NDT personnel training and certification programs. Provides counseling/corrective guidance regarding examination performance, and decertifies or retrains/tests personnel as appropriate. Conducts site monitoring/surveillance of NDT personnel and operations; evaluation of program elements; and product re-inspection activities. Interprets applicable specifications, procedures, and other technical requirements. Compiles and prepares technical and interpretive reports relating to NDT detected workmanship trends; analysis of reject rates; the resolution of problems; and the impact of methodology changes on manufacturing and inspection operations.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of experience. Master’s Degree and 3 years of experience. Ph.D. and 0 years of experience. A candidate must be a certified Nondestructive Test Examiner (ASNT Level III or NAVSEA 250-1500-1 Test Examiner), having fulfilled all prescribed education and experience requirements. 4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. 8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. An Apprentice Certificate or graduation from Navy Nuclear Power School can be substituted for Bachelor’s degree. A candidate must have and be able to apply a demonstrated knowledge of applicable NDT techniques and methods, as well as their physical, chemical and mathematical fundamentals. This position requires proficiency in analytical processes and effective interpersonal and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Current or previous Level II or Level III ASNT SNT-TC-1A certifications or equivalent (e.g., NAVSEA 250-1500-1) in VT, MT, PT, UT and RT methods are desirable. Experience in the areas of inspecting castings, piping, and structural parts is also desirable. Candidates should have all certification and training documentation.
