Job Description:

Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Renewable Energy Specialist to join our Energy Efficiency team.

What does a Renewable Energy Specialist do for us?

Serves as the Company subject matter expert for customer-owned distributed energy resources.

Oversees the application process for Rates 6, 8, 68 and 84, and provides excellent customer service including technical assistance and advice to customers participating in or inquiring about customer generation options.

Oversees testing and certification of systems for compatibility and resolves issues of compliance with customers, dealers, electricians, engineers and facilities managers.

Provides training both internally and externally on the process and requirements for interconnection, billing and safety.


REQUIRED SKILLS

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of both on- and off-grid alternative energy system design, installation, and maintenance
  • basic construction techniques
  • Prefer:
    • Idaho Power's interconnection process and requirements, applicable tariffs, rates, rules, and regulations. Knowledge of fuel cell mechanics

Skills in:

  • Basic tool use, excellent oral and written communication, organization, customer service, clear and concise writing, issue resolution
  • Prefer:
    • Basic utility operations and field work. Basic electrical system diagnostics and repair

Ability to:

  • Excellent oral and written communication, demonstrated customer service ability, self-direction, negotiate complex issues, ability to influence, maintain commitment and manage conflict
  • Prefer:
    • Ability to develop alternatives and evaluate their value and potential for meeting company needs, analyze large and/or complex datasets and databases, prepare comprehensive written and oral reports of problems, alternatives and recommendations


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Associate’s degree in Renewable Energy Technology, Alternative Energy, Energy Systems Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Solar Energy Technology, or energy-related field

OR

  • Equivalent combination of training, experience, and education

Prefer:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or energy-related field, Certificate or two-year degree in renewable, photovoltaic or energy efficiency system design applications

Experience

  • Five years working with alternative energy systems with at least two years in renewable energy operations

Prefer:

  • Two years working for a utility

Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record based on the driving requirements of the position
  • Obtain North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) certification within 6 months of hire date

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires both office work and field work. The office work requires working at a desk/computer. It also requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs.

The field work consists of meeting in power plants, operation centers, outdoor worksites, and off-site meeting areas. Driving is performed occasionally. Lifts no greater than 10lbs are performed occasionally and occasional walking is required on sometimes rough, uneven ground. Stooping, bending, and standing is performed occasionally while visiting certain worksites. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. This job may require the performance of additional tasks assigned by company leaders or management. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Employee works with little or no field supervision in remote areas with limited communications. Employee is also the primary field representative to customers regarding renewable energy options and programs offered by Idaho Power. For these reasons, the employee has wide latitude in decision-making, which requires sound judgment and thorough knowledge of programs, as well as the ability to work with antagonistic or opportunistic customers. Position also monitors rate 84 and 68 classes, provides customer service, and provides information for residential PV systems. Completes physical inspection of customer owned generation for Company compliance of Interconnection Standards. Works with Company Rates and Regulatory and Legal departments.
