Position Overview

The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire a Staff Developmental Specialist I for the Choate Mental Health and Developmental Center located in Anna, Illinois to develop and revise curriculum and conduct courses for the trainee programs for Mental Health Technicians, Residential Services Supervisors and internship, apprenticeship or orientation programs of the Developmental Disabilities Services Division. Directs groups or committees responsible for the planning and development of training/orientation programs. Assists with other employee development programs. Evaluates and develops audio-visual training aids and conducts or coordinates selected courses and other specialized workshops and seminars.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Develops and revises curriculum and conducts courses for the trainee programs for Mental Health Technician, Residential Services Supervisor and internship, apprenticeship or orientation programs of the Developmental Disabilities Services Division. 

  2. Based upon information gathered from the Joint Commission surveys, audits, etc., develops and conducts specialized courses directed to identify facility groups including Mental Health Technicians, Residential Services Supervisors, Nurses and Support Service Workers to address deficiencies in Developmental Disabilities Services. 

  3. Designs assessment tools, conducts evaluations and analyzes results from evaluations of Developmental Disabilities Services staff development programs at Choate. 

  4. Designs new and revises existing training programs on general personnel, labor relations and EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) issues for all Developmental Disabilities Services staff.

  5. Evaluates and creates various audio-visual training aids.

  6. Makes recommendations to Quality Manager on course approval. 

  7. Administers and coordinates staff development activities in the absence of the supervisor.

  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college. Academic course work should include quantitative measures (introductory statistics or business mathematics or social science analytical tools), educational methods, psychology of individuals, organizational or group behavior, labor relations or equivalents.

  2. Requires two (2) years of professional experience in education or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Two (2) years of professional experience working with training theories, methods and applying current techniques.

  2. Two (2) years of professional experience contributing to the development of, or interpreting policies, procedures and best practices.

  3. Two (2) years of professional experience assisting staff and outside vendors in developing and conducting training courses.

  4. Three (3) years of professional experience utilizing automated multi-tasking computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel, in the completion of routine tasks.

  5. Two (2) years of professional experience conducting group and individual training sessions.

  6. Two (2) years of professional experience evaluating training results, providing feedback and revising training curriculum as necessary.

  7. One (1) year of professional experience recommending corrective action as a result of training session observations.

  3. Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.

  4. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.

  5. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
