Job Description: The Nursing Graduate works under direct line-of-sight supervision of the Registered Nurse in the clinical setting and participates appropriately in the patient care delivery process. The incumbent also orients to the RN assignment, excluding independent nursing care. This position may participate in medication administration under the direction and supervision of the licensed RN. The New Grad RN position is for recent RN graduates or those with less than one year of RN experience. Those hired as a New Grad RN will work under a licensed RN until license can be verified. In conjunction with working on this unit New Grad RNs attend Intermountain’s one-year nurse residency program. The nurse residency program supports New Grad RNs in their transition from classroom to caregiver through 72 paid clinical hours, webinars, simulations, case studies, and in person meetings. Unit Specifics The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Utah Valley Hospital is a 36 bed ICU. The critical care nurse is responsible to provide direct care to critically ill patients in life-threatening situations within the Intensive Care Unit. Our patient population includes stroke, neurosurgery, cardiac, cardiothoracic surgery, shock (multi system organ failure), trauma, respiratory, and renal failure patients requiring CRRT, SLEDD, or intermittent dialysis. The ICU nurse must be physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to care for critically ill patients and their loved ones. Must be proficient in a wide variety of high-level nursing skills. The critical care nurse needs to be a specialist in evaluating, recognizing trends and complications, administering cares, and collaborating with key members of the critical care team, including physicians, pharmacists, therapists, and other ancillary team members. Interpersonal communication, leadership, strategic planning, critical thinking, decision-making, and patient advocacy are imperative qualifications for the nurse in the critical care setting. Advanced assessment skills and ability to work in a high-stress, fast paced environment is essential. Experience with high-tech hemodynamic monitoring and supportive devices including but not limited to PA catheters, Cheetah, EVD, CRRT, IABP, Impella, temporary pacemakers, Hemisphere, and Belmont (rapid transfuser) are highly favored. New employees will receive a 10-12-week orientation based on experienced. After orientation schedule will consist of a rotating 8 weeks of days and nights up to a year for a well-rounded experience. Straight nights are available as well instead of the rotating schedule but at the 6 months to a year mark all new hires will go to straight nights. For new grads, CNA experience preferred. Assessment: Collects patient data (i.e., vital signs) under the direct supervision of the RN and reports significant changes in patient condition. Completes accurate documentation also under the direct supervision of the RN. Planning: Observes development and modification of the interdisciplinary plan of care used to care for individual patients (under the direct supervision of the RN). Observes and discusses with the RN prioritization of patient needs among all patients assigned to their care during any one shift (under the direct supervision of the RN). Implementation: Observes the implementation of the patient plan of care giving consideration to specialized needs of patients such as their physical, emotiona,l and social needs, age, ethnic origin and other factors (under the direct supervision of the RN). Evaluation: Reports patient responses to treatments and collaborates with the RN regarding changes requiring modification of nursing interventions to meet patient needs. Participates in patient/family education needs, under the supervision of the RN, as determined by initial and on-going assessments, patient diagnosis, level of learning readiness, and patient/family/SO requests using other disciplines as appropriate. Routinely observes and discusses all aspects of care with the RN regarding patient care delivery. Recognizes and demonstrates legal/ethical implications of care delivery by: Practicing as a Nursing Resident under the supervision of the RN; Complying with regulatory standards; Completing accurate documentation; and Maintaining confidentiality. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for patient care delivery within their defined role (under the direct supervision of the RN). Achieve Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in a timely manner per Intermountain Healthcare standards and expectations. Complete orientation and training requirements including successful progression through and completion of the Nursing Residency program. Minimum Qualifications New Grad RN Entry Pay: $29.82 Successful completion of a recognized and accredited Nursing/RN education program (education will be verified). RN Entry Pay: $31.61 Current RN License in state of practice. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for healthcare providers. Effective interpersonal communication skills. RNs with less than 12 months of working experience as an RN prior to joining Intermountain must obtain their BSN within five years of their start date. Physical Requirements: Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies. - and - Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations. - and - Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc. - and - Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. - and - Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc). - and - May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
