JOB TITLE: RIGGER
REPORTS TO: STRUCTURAL SUPERINTENDENT
SUMMARY
Riggers assemble and install rigging gear such as cables, ropes, pulleys and winches to lift, lower, move or position machinery, structural steel and other heavy objects. They use weight handling equipment such as fork trucks, cranes, wire ropes (all types), end fittings, slings, winches, chain falls, boat slings, boat davits, and horizontal and verticals pad-eyes. The experienced Rigger will normally be able to perform all the following tasks: examine objects to be moved, estimate their size, shape and weight and decide on the type of equipment necessary; erect a temporary jib or derrick if required, and install cables, pulleys and other tackle; choose or make slinging equipment and attach it to the load; erect cranes and mobile crane booms, increase the height of tower cranes by bolting component parts in place, and rigging cables; splice ropes and cables to make slings and tackle; erect structural steel for buildings under construction; erect panels used on facades; and inspect, maintain and repair equipment of trade.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Align, level, and anchor machinery
- Attach loads to rigging to provide support or prepare them for moving, using hand and power tools.
- Attach pulleys and blocks to fixed overhead structures such as beams, ceilings, and gin pole booms, using bolts and clamps.
- Control movement of heavy equipment through narrow openings or confined spaces, using chainfalls, gin poles, gallows frames, and other equipment.
- Dismantle and store rigging equipment after use.
- Fabricate, set up, and repair rigging, supporting structures, hoists, and pulling gear, using hand and power tools.
- Manipulate rigging lines, hoists, and pulling gear to move or support materials such as heavy equipment, ships
- Select gear such as cables, pulleys, and winches, according to load weights and sizes, facilities, and work schedules
- Signal or verbally direct workers engaged in hoisting and moving loads, in order to ensure safety of workers and materials.
- Test rigging to ensure safety and reliability.
- Tilt, dip, and turn suspended loads to maneuver over, under, and/or around obstacles, using multi-point suspension techniques.
- Ensure work is done safely and meets quality standards
- Provide a great level of attention to detail and focus on the given task
- Follow all safety rules and quality standards
- Report any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate, or GED
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Within the shipyard, minimal exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, hazardous machinery
- Some travel required
