GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Midwife works as part of the medical provider team performing a variety of direct patient services. This includes physical examinations, assessment, diagnosis, treatment plans, medication management, lab review, and/or referral including hospitalization when necessary. The Midwife also monitors the general management plan for assigned patients. The Midwife performs these functions under the general supervision of a licensed physician.
JOB-SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Duties:
1. Provides full scope of midwifery services to patients including antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and gynecological care, all in consultation with a supervising physician.
2. Obtains completes medical history, reviews medications, and performs complete physical examinations, all in consultation with a supervising physician.
3. Provides health education to patients and their families as appropriate. Stresses the importance of preventive healthcare measures.
4. Orders routine and diagnostic lab and radiology studies according to approved protocols.
5. Diagnoses acute and chronic illness on the basis of clinical findings, laboratory and radiology reports, and/or the results of other diagnostic procedures according to approved protocols.
6. Prescribes medications as needed according to therapeutic goals. Explains medications and treatment plans to patients and their families.
7. Formulates, initiates, and monitors management plans for assigned patients using approved protocols and/or consultation with a supervising physician.
8. Refers patients who require more intensive services to a supervising physician, specialist, or hospital as necessary. Follows up on patients’ progress.
9. Confers with consulting physicians and nurses concerning treatment and care of patients.
10. Performs on-call responsibilities, including hospital OB call and after-hours patient calls.
11. Renders emergency care and treatment, as needed, to include deliveries, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, automatic external defibrillator utilization, administration of emergency medications, etc., according to approved protocols.
12. During an emergency, pandemic, or other workforce need, provides medical care for patients of all ages as directed by the Chief Medical, Operating, or Executive Officer.
Practice Management:
13. Using the Electronic Health Record, documents all clinical activities within a timely manner and in compliance with required standards. Reviews patient records regularly and obtains physician counter signatures when necessary.
14. Prepares on a timely basis such reports, claims, and correspondence as are necessary or appropriate to ensure prompt payment for the services rendered.
15. Uses all available resources in diagnosis and treatment, such as laboratory and radiological testing, in an appropriate and cost efficient manner.
16. Attends all medical staff meetings and participates in performance Improvement, Quality Assurance, and Risk Management programs.
17. Applies risk management policies and procedures in daily role with patients, colleagues, and others. This includes, but is not limited to, peer review and chart audits.
18. Participates in community outreach, marketing programs, and other activities as requested.
19. Provides supervision to Nurses and Health Assistants, as appropriate, as well as to other staff members providing services in connection to the Midwife’s patients.
20. Advises the leadership team, as appropriate, on issues related to equipment, personnel, and other matters of mutual interest.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Master’s Degree in Nursing Practice required. Degree must be from an accredited school of nursing that is recognized by the State Board of Nursing with certification through the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB.)
2. APRN-CNM license to practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife in the state required. (Or license eligible.)
3. RN license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state required. (Or license eligible.)
4. AMCB certification required.
5. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
6. Two or more years of midwifery experience preferred.
7. Proficiency and experience with Microsoft Office products required; experience with an Electronic Health Record preferred.
8. Proficiency in English required.
9. Proficiency in Spanish either preferred or required, depending on clinic location. If required, must be able to speak enough Spanish to examine Spanish-speaking patients and converse on a basic level.
10. Demonstrated ability to relate with warmth and effectiveness to culturally diverse patients as well as other company providers and staff members.
11. Ability and willingness to serve on the active medical staff of a hospital used by the organization, which includes other requirements as part of the privileging process.
12. Ability to be credentialed and approved by the organization's Board of Directors.
