Under the general supervision of the Fire Marshal, inspector is responsible for technical and specialized field and office work on new and existing buildings, relating to fire inspections, fire safety systems, and general fire prevention. Work involves responsibility for field enforcement of compliance with local and State fire safety codes, laws, and ordinances. Inspector will inspect residential, commercial, and industrial properties for the detection and removal of fire hazards. Duties may involve an element of personal danger. Work is reviewed through observation and written reports for adherence to established policies and procedures. This position is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma / GED
Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of the principles of fire protection, fire prevention, and public fire education.
Knowledge of the use of fire equipment and procedures common to fire suppression, fire prevention, and public fire education.
Knowledge of the laws and regulations concerning fire inspection, and fire prevention in the State of Florida.
Knowledge and understanding of National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Plan (NRP), as well as the Incident Command System (ICS).
Ability to express oneself clearly, tactfully and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to accurately document findings; create and develop a plan for resolving safety violations.
Ability to read and evaluate building and site plans for compliance with all appropriate laws.
Proficient in organizational and communication skills for dealing with staff, the public sector and appropriate agencies in handling complaints, problem solving and achieving code compliance.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
Physical:
This is light work requiring the exertion of 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping. Work requires sitting at a keyboard for extended periods of time.
Sensory:
Tasks require manual dexterity in addition to visual and hearing acuity and oral communications abilities.
