SUMMARY
The FAA's NextGen Weather Processor (NWP) transforms meteorological weather information, including forecast model data, into aviation-specific weather information. These enhanced capabilities produce greater situational awareness relative to the location, movement, and severity of convective weather. Improved weather information, provided by NWP, allows air traffic control specialists to manage air traffic more efficiently around hazardous weather areas.
The NWP Network Engineer will work independently to provide expertise in software requirements analysis, design, design reviews, development, software testing, integration, installation, and maintenance of computer systems.
The successful candidate will be a highly responsible, team-oriented individual with a strong work ethic and a self-starter. Ability to act independently to research and resolve problems. Excellent interpersonal skills; able to rapidly develop positive customer and team relationships and possess communication skills, including the ability to develop analytical documents.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Provide 2nd level engineering support for the NWP
- Support system development/testing/integration/deployment/field support activities for NWP systems
- Review and comment on system engineering documents; system requirement documents; system testing documents, system maintenance planning documents
- Attend system design reviews; technical interchange meetings; any other meetings as requested to support program and team
- Possess a technical understanding of systems; databases; networking; computing environments; virtualization
- Develop and manage system engineering artifacts; system requirements artifacts; system testing artifacts; required product baseline artifacts.
- Able to support software applications in Linux and Windows environments
- Participate in system test and key site test activities as a tester
- Able to troubleshoot networking, hardware, and Operating System (OS) issues
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Experience in performing system testing including issue documentation, troubleshooting, test procedure creation, and test report generation.
- Proficient technical writing and oral communication skills
- Working knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 Networking
- Knowledge of UNIX/LINUX skills and Shell Scripting
- Knowledge of hardware diagnostics
- Proficient technical writing and oral communication skills
- Familiar with PostgreSQL.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Interprets and analyzes complex information systems data to develop technical documentation, system diagrams
- Experience in software and Operating System (OS) testing
- Working knowledge of Java, JavaScript, JavaScript Object Notation (JSON), Python, and/or C
- Knowledge of Red Hat Automation Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux IdM, Red Hat Satellite, Docker, Podman, Rancher, Kubernetes, Angular, Open Layers, Zabbix, and/or Source Code Management (SCM)
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
A Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two (2) years of technical experience.
Or
An Associate's Degree in a related field and a minimum of four (4) years of technical experience
Or
A High School Diploma or GED and a minimum of six (6) years of related technical experience.
LOCATION
Work will be conducted in a hybrid environment, splitting time between a remote working location and the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. Some travel may be required.
