Job Posting for Journeyman - Interior Painter at Interior Painting of Asheville INC

Position: Interior Painter

Overall Job Description: As a painter for Interior Painting of Asheville INC, your job responsibilities will include the following:

  • Cleaning
  • Prepping
  • Equipment/Environmental Logistics
  • Applying Paint/Primer
  • Use of Basic Hand Tools
  • Delegating & Supervising all of these Tasks

Beyond the actual functions of the job as Lead Painter, you will also be expected to show up on time or early for every shift. Your shift will start promptly at 7:30 am and is over at 4:00 pm with a 30 minute unpaid break for Lunch & two 10 minute breaks, one morning & one afternoon paid. If you are running late you must communicate your tardiness by text or phone call before your shift begins, repeat offenders will be documented, and this may result in further action at the owner's discretion. You are highly encouraged to bring your own lunch, but if you choose to leave the Job Site for Lunch, you must return within the 30 minute time allotted. Business days are Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

You must have your own, reliable transportation at all times, and expect to travel every week to different job sites located in Asheville, and the surrounding areas. When you arrive at the jobsite for your shift to begin, on time, you must be in Full Uniform consisting of White Painters Pants & a White T Shirt. Your uniform must be washed clean, and you must take time to properly groom yourself before arriving to work (teeth brushed, hair combed, etc)

Interior Painting of Asheville INC has a 0% tolerance for any alcohol or drug use during your shift. If substance use is suspected or discovered by the Owner or Project Manager, you will be dismissed from your shift immediately, and further disciplinary actions may be taken at the Owner’s discretion. We encourage a healthy lifestyle for our painters at IPA, and strongly discourage tobacco use of any kind.

Cleaning Responsibilities: Keeping things clean is essential for a good paint job, and is a strict requirement for all painters at IPA. You will be responsible for cleaning all kinds of things including, walls, floors, baseboards, tools, brushes, roller covers, etc. You will need to use mild degreasers, simple green solution, ultimate glass spray, along with paper towels, terricloth, stainless steel scrubbers, shop vacs, brooms, razors etc. Cleaning will happen every day, and at the end of every job to ensure the Job Site is left cleaner than we found it.

Prepping Responsibilities: Your paint job is only as good as your prep and prep will involve, sanding walls/trim surfaces, using a caulking gun to reseal any gaps in trim or otherwise, spackling or applying drywall mud or filler to various patches that may be needed, using tape, masking papers, drop cloths. Removing wall plates, bathroom fixtures, etc and you must be accountable for putting everything back that has been removed. Cleaning and prepping go hand in hand, and these activities will be consistent themes during the beginning of every job you do for IPA. The Cleaning/Prepping phase will only be completed when the Project Manager or Owner verifies your work, and permits the team to move onto application.

Equipment/Environmental Logistics: This part of the job occurs consistently during every shift and means that you will be responsible for loading/unloading all painting supplies from the Project Manager’s Vehicle. At certain times you will be required to help move furniture away from walls to be painted, move ladders to different parts of the jobsite or set up/break down work stations depending on the needs of the team. When moving anything on the jobsite it is critical that you communicate with other members of the team verbally, expressing if you need help or if you are walking behind someone on a ladder, etc. All painters at IPA will need to be able to carry 50 LBS of supplies at any given time, and use good form (lifting with legs) for their own self preservation of their bodies.

Application of Paints/Primers: Painting and priming is arguably the easiest part of the job, but there are certain techniques that you must follow, everytime for our customers to experience consistent results. The Project Manager will have the final say on application techniques, but veteran painters on the team will also be able to provide coaching on things like: how to hold your brush, how to do a “cut in”, how to load your roller with paint, how to lay the paint out on the surface, etc. All paints & primers must be well shaken before use, and poured from the back so that the front labels are always clearly visible & paint free. If anything strange happens during your paint application process, stop painting immediately, alert the project manager, and allow that area to dry by walking away. Paint application must happen in unison with other team members, for best results, and you will be required to follow the lead of the Project Manager during application times. All walls will be coated with two top coats for every job that we do, no exceptions.

Use of Basic Hand Tools: All painters at IPA will need to be well versed in using all of the following tools: paint brushes, paint rollers, extension poles, ladders, pivot steps, battery powered drill, screw drivers, tape measures, masking tools, allen wrenches, pliers, scissors, 5 in 1’s, wire brushes, etc. Beyond the use of these tools, all painters will also be required to keep these tools clean.

Lastly, Rachel and I are incredibly grateful to have you join our small business. We have high standards for one another, and also the people around us. The privilege to employ others comes with a huge responsibility and we take that very seriously. We want to see you grow and thrive during your time at IPA, and we are always available to discuss ANYTHING with you 1 on 1, we simply ask that you honor this commitment by only discussing sensitive matters in a private setting. Sensitive matters might include, your schedule or request for time off, your coworkers schedule or their behavior on the jobsite, or even the homeowner’s behavior.
