Shift Requirements: 40 hours a week, Monday – Friday, with flextime and telework available.
Extensive Travel: including over nights.
The Team:
This position is part of the Modeling, Forecasting, and Telemetrics Team within the Systems Planning Bureau. The Team is composed of ten individuals who monitor, model, and forecast traffic volumes for the development of roadway designs, planning documents, and computer models.
As a Communications Technician 2, we are looking for a candidate who:
- Is a self-starter, able to work effectively both alone, and in a group.
- Is experienced with construction equipment and materials.
- Is experienced and knowledgeable of complex electrical and communication technology equipment.
- Be familiar with how to accurately read and interpret blueprints and diagrams.
Duties:
- Primary responsibilities will include:
- Installing and maintaining Continuous Count Site (CCS) equipment and systems.
- Locating CCS equipment for utility markings prior to work near a site.
- Secondary responsibilities include:
- Supporting the Short-term Count Program by repairing, maintaining, and updating their equipment.
- Supporting the Iowa Trip Generation Program by deploying portable cameras for the short-term traffic recording.
Other details:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must possess a Commercial Driver’ Permit, and be able to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License, within 40 days of employment.
- Must be able to regularly lift/lower, carry, and push/pull various amounts of force within the “heavy work” as defined by the US Department of Labor.
- Extensive travel will be required, including overnight.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- Two years of full-time work experience in telecommunication/radio system design, installation, or service.
- A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in electronic technology equals one year of full-time experience.
- Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Communications Technician 1.
