JOB TITLE: Extended School Year Physical Therapist
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
PRIMARY PURPOSE: Plan and provide therapy to eligible students with physical disabilities in accordance with the Individual Education Plan developed by the ARD committee. Assess students and provide therapeutic intervention to eliminate, reduce, or accommodate problems or impairments that interfere with student's ability to derive full benefit from the educational process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited program, or Clinical Doctor of Physical Therapy
- Valid Texas License as a physical therapist granted by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Knowledge of medical information and indications for physical therapy intervention
- Skill in use of tests and measurements for assessing physical functioning
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Minimum Experience:
One year experience in school therapy preferred
Pediatric experience preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Referral and Assessment:
- Collect and review student information/conduct therapy screening of students as appropriate.
- Document and report screening results to referral source.
- Select appropriate evaluation instruments and procedures.
- Conduct formal/informal assessments and complete report in a timely manner.
- Interpret and disseminate assessment information to ARD committee.
Program Planning:
- Coordinate therapy services with school personnel and community agencies.
- Participate in ARD meeting to develop Individual Educational Plans.
- Evaluate student progress according to therapy goals/objectives.
Intervention/Service Delivery:
- Plan and provide direct and consultative services consistent with physical therapy goals contained in Individual Educational Plans.
- Manage intervention programs carried out by others.
- Recommend appropriate adaptive equipment and when necessary design, construct and/or alter equipment for students.
Consultation/Education:
- Consult with educational staff regarding use of specialized equipment and material.
- Provide workshop for staff development.
- Provide information on architectural barriers, classroom modifications, and/or safety precautions.
Communications:
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students and parents.
- Implement policies and directives of the administration.
- Maintain inventories of equipment, materials and supplies.
- Ability to interpret policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules and local board policies.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Must maintain emotional control and exercise reasoning and problem solving skills while under stress. Must demonstrate ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written). Should be able to interpret procedures and analyze data for decision-making. Regular district wide travel. Heavy lifting and moderate carrying. Ability to administer manual exercise and physical therapy treatments. Biological exposure to bacterial and communicative diseases.
Safety: Contribute to the prevention of accidents and injuries by observing safety rules and District policy, practicing the principles and skills taught in safety training, wearing personal protective equipment as required, reporting injuries and incidences immediately to supervisor, and being proactive in the ongoing efforts to improve and maintain workplace safety.
