Movement Field Organizer for We Choose Us:

A Movement for Multiracial Democracy in Minnesota

Hosted by ISAIAH/Faith in Minnesota

Compensation: $60,000-65,000/ year salary with benefits

(Commensurate with experience)

Exempt, full-time position

POSITION AT A GLANCE

  • We are looking for experienced candidates who can enroll leaders across the state to execute a strategic field plan that supports our campaign to protect and fight for a multi-racial democracy for generations to come.
  • Ideal candidates should have a range of organizing and strategic planning skills and experience that can translate a cohesive field strategy with a wide range of coalition members into movement building for pro-democracy efforts in 2022 and beyond.
  • Our office is located in St. Paul, MN, but much of the work can be performed outside the office. Candidates can begin the work out-of-state, but must eventually be located in MN. A reasonable relocation stipend can be negotiated.
  • This position will report directly to the campaign director and work with a team of campaign staff as well as campaign partners in a large coalition space and more concentrated organizing cohort/field working group.
  • This is a permanent position with benefits that is dependent upon dedicated funding.

WHY THIS POSITION MATTERS

Minnesota has the highest voter turnout in the nation, some of the highest engagement in civic life and the largest body of people of color in elected office per capita because of the commitment of Minnesotans to a robust multiracial democracy.

The freedom to have a vote and a civic say about our lives, and how our families, communities, state and country are governed and cared for is one of the most sacred freedoms Minnesotans should be able to experience.

And yet, we see a national trend of intentional dismantling of democracy attempting to take root in our state. A handful of lawmakers alongside powerful and wealthy corporations, have taken an outsized say about our lives, while attempting to chip away at the foundations of our democracy that are promised to all of us through both rhetoric and policy.

The future of Minnesota’s ability to continue to progress and advance a state that allows every resident - no matter their race, income, gender or religion - to thrive, rests in our ability to ensure that our democracy is protected and expanded.

This Campaign and the role of the Movement Field Organizer are about leveraging strategy, collaboration, and organizing in dedication to that mission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

The Movement Field Organizer will collaborate with partners of the We Choose Us Campaign and the campaign staff team to develop an integrated field strategy, execute tactical field programs, and work in alignment with other organizers in the progressive ecosystem.

Specifically, the Movement Field Organizer will:

  • Partner with the campaign director and organizers from partner organizations to lead a strategic, multi-year organizing path to enroll leaders across Minnesota that includes but is not limited to virtual and in-person democracy forums, public organizing meetings and leadership retreats, coalition-wide actions, and voter contact work.
  • Support the execution of other strategic field tactics as needed such as lobby days, legislative briefings, caucus/convention organizing, call-your-legislator campaigns, town halls, political education sessions, etc.
  • Coordinate across coalition partners, especially the field organizations.
  • Work with other campaign working groups to track and support mobilization opportunities.
  • Use the Voter Action Network and related campaign software to track field data, set up phone banks, cut turf for door knocks, engage volunteers through written communications, etc.
  • Support data analysis and targeting of key strategic legislative districts
  • Maintain regular written and verbal communications with campaign coalition and internal staff team.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with We Choose Us Campaign volunteers and members of partner organizations.
  • Implement and facilitate strategic narrative recommendations in organizing strategy and evaluate their effectiveness.

WHAT WE’RE HOPING TO SEE FROM CANDIDATES

Connection and collaboration with the Organizing for Power Cohort: This campaign intends to prioritize and uplift grassroots organizing and the voices of Minnesotans. To do so, we have created an organizing cohort which we call the Organizing for Power Cohort. This cohort will be made up of organizers from partner organizations whose focus is to carry out the strategic goals of the campaign in addition to their organization’s priorities.

The Organizer will partner with the campaign director to steward the Organizing for Power Cohort and to align a coherent field strategy and provide capacity for organizers to integrate the strategy into their existing work.

Execution of tactical field operations: The Movement Field Organizer will be responsible for leading We Choose Us-hosted events, actions, and voter engagement work and supporting partner organizations in doing the same. They will be responsible for keeping updated records in VAN and EveryAction and supporting data sharing with partner organizations as appropriate.

Leader/volunteer enrollment and management: The We Choose Us Campaign is a leader-led campaign. That means meeting people where they’re at and providing opportunities for Minnesotans to take ownership of the campaign path. Some of these leaders will be from partner organizations, and some will be unaffiliated with any organization but interested in getting involved in the fight for multiracial democracy. The Movement Field Organizer will be responsible for running this program and relating to current and potential leaders.

Carrying out a cohesive field strategy with relevant strategic planning and data analysis: Our campaign organizing efforts need to translate into movement building and organized civic

engagement. We’re looking for candidates who can work with partners to develop and implement a field strategy meant to bring along a multitude of stakeholders and community members to add to our fight for democracy.

An ability to empower others: Our campaign’s success depends on the efforts of many. The Field and Organizing Director will oversee efforts to engage other partners of the campaign coalition. and develop tool kits given to allies and supporters. In addition, we’re looking for candidates that can effectively guide and coordinate stakeholders whenever new learnings from the field require adjustments to campaign strategy.

A personal stake: What does democracy mean to you and what importance does it hold for our

future? We encourage you to speak to why this work appeals to you beyond a desire to “do good” and what is motivating you to seek a position that is focused on the future of our democracy.
