What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pharmacy Intern position at Island Hospital?
Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Intern dispenses and compounds medications prescribed by physicians or other medical practitioners. The final check of medications and/or written orders will be checked by the pharmacist. Duties: # Prepares new medication orders to be sent to nursing station including expediting STAT orders. Observes all legal and procedural steps to ensure final check of appropriateness by a pharmacist prior to dispensing. # Uses aseptic technique in laminar and vertical flow hoods, prepares large and small volume IV admixtures, prepares chemotherapy in vertical flow hood (demonstrating appropriate handling technique for cytotoxic medications as required), prepares Total Parenteral Nutrition solutions, and prepares sterile syringes as required. # Interprets physician orders for correctness, reviewing for possible drug interactions/incompatibilities. Transcribes new orders into information system, documenting clarification of orders with physicians, and potential adverse drug events. Documents clinical interventions. # Maintains narcotic inventory reconciling same to narcotic tracking system. Performs assigned floor checks, and maintains emergency trays. # Transport new medication orders to each nursing station, as required; pull and deliver floor stock medication to each nursing station. # Communicates with physicians/nurses/other health care professionals providing pharmaceutical expertise as required. Utilizes available literature sources to give drug information as requested or required. # Perform cart fill operation and deliver to floor. # Assists in classification of Medication Utilization Evaluation and Adverse Drug Events data. Gains awareness of Quality Improvement goals and assistance in related programs and surveys. # Extemporaneously prepare and package dosage forms into unit dose packaging observing all rules and record keeping requirements # Performs chart reviews as required for assessment of therapies, interactions, and patient response to medications and for regulatory required monitoring of therapy parameters # Complete additional tasks as needed Requirements: # Current enrollment in an accredited School of Pharmacy. # Current Pharmacy Intern license in the State of Washington
