Job Description:
SUMMARY: The Material Handling Supervisor is responsible for leading, guiding, directing and managing a specific area of the plant consistent with policies and procedures of client as well as with Federal, state and local law. Will be accountable for the safety of employees, supervision of warehouse staff members, material handling in the distribution center, profitability of the facility, management and control, human resource utilization and treatment, and the development of a total employee team. The Material Handling Supervisor will also be responsible for plant labor, inventory control, product shipments to customer, waste reduction and ensure human resources are managed in the most effective manner, resulting in a positive contribution to the bottom line of the company P & L.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This list is not intended to be all-inclusive and other duties may be assigned.
- Initiate and/or maintain required safety and ergonomic programs to insure a safe working environment and meet company goal of an injury free workplace.
- Be an active member on the Safety Committee.
- Set and attain goals to reduce injuries and cost per claim of injuries.
- Ensure employee ability to safely operate material handling equipment.
- Ensure employee safety training, assist in the identification of and correction of safety hazards and ergonomic issues.
- Ensure all staff and employees know and understand HACCP and SSOP documents; CCP’s and the HACCP plan.
- Manage and direct the material handling crews and adhere to transportation standards, times and efficiencies.
- Communicates with Shipping / Logistics Manager as daily needs and requirements of shipping operations may change; schedule workloads and prioritize shipments; ensure all products are labeled, clean, free of damage and properly stored in the warehouse.
- Develops the skill and education level of group leaders. Facilitates training and development sessions and exercises as needed.
- Manage business factors for attaining targeted fill rate of 98.5% or better.
- Provide resolution and execution to key shortage issues to management.
- Manage material handling and placement of finished goods in the warehouse and freezer.
- Recognize through formal programs to keep employees informed and acknowledge their efforts.
- Ensure all operating procedures are followed and correct and/or update when needed.
- Plan and coordinate work, train and cross-train, motivate, and evaluate performance of department employees.
- Maintain a high standard of employee relations; continually seek ways for improvement.
- Maintain or exceed goals on fill rate and efficiencies.
- Initiate and modify as necessary a cost control program that will assist the company in remaining competitive.
- Responsible for production employees for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the plant.
- Carries out managerial and supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
- Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or equivalent with at least two years’ related experience or the combination of education and experience that enables performance in all aspects of the position, including supervisory experience. Experience in food manufacturing desired. Well-developed management skills utilizing sound management principles in leading a team of employees.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively manage time and meet all specified deadlines.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as safety files, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Must be able to effectively communicate with USDA, production and management personnel.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle; or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; speak; hear taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.
