Research Scientist (NASA-JSC)

Description

The Research Scientist will support NASA funded projects investigating space radiation effects in immune dysfunction. The position involves the study support and execution, data analysis, as well as reporting experimental results in the form of scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications. The position also involves coordinating laboratory resources to carry out studies, which include the collection and processing of human biomedical samples for various assays. Additionally, the position will support the development of new grant proposals as determined by programmatic need and relevant solicitations from appropriate funding sources.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. responsible for supporting radiobiology experiments by preparing, exposing, collecting, and analyzing biological samples from rodents and humans.
2. responsible for experiment design and implementation.
3. responsible for performing sample analysis consisting of aseptic tissue culture, histological and molecular techniques.
4. responsible for collecting and processing biological specimens from rodents after exposure.
5. responsible for data analysis and reporting experimental results in the form of scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
6. responsible for maintenance of space radiation biology laboratory iso documentation, various inventories (chemical, and otherwise), and other laboratory support as required.

education/experience

required:

1. bachelor of science in biology or related field.
2. at least four (4) years of relevant work experience; cell culture and analysis, molecular techniques, and animal handling and euthanasia.

desired:

1. experience with radiation sources.
2. experience in various immunological assays.
3. experience coordinating laboratory activities.
4. experience with histological analysis.
5. experience with rodent handling and care.

skills/training

required:

1. demonstrated ability to work multiple projects concurrently.
2. willingness to work off-nominal work hours during surge events.
3. ability to work in a high pace environment and maintain scientific integrity.
4. willingness to learn new techniques and procedures as project and research demands.
