The Johnson & Johnson Law Department is recruiting for a Patent Admin-Paralegal , located in West Chester, PA!

We are looking for an experienced, highly motivated, proactive and self-starting individual who is looking to challenge themselves and develop their career in a supportive, team oriented and collegial environment. This position will be responsible for assisting the DePuy Synthes legal team in all areas of domestic and foreign patent prosecution and providing general administrative assistance to a team of patent professionals. The Patent Admin- Paralegal may additionally be responsible for various special projects related to acquisitions, divestitures, agreements, and due diligence.

Key Responsibilities:

This position will be responsible for assisting with patent prosecution in various ways, including:

  • Working with patent professionals to review patent applications and papers prior to electronically filing them in the USPTO.
  • Working with patent professionals to review office actions and prepare responses prior to electronic filing.
  • Obtaining inventor signatures on formal papers.
  • Communicating with our docketing group to keep our docket up to date.
  • Conducting regular docket reviews with patent attorney in order to assure timely responses to various matters.
  • Reviewing application files throughout the prosecution process and following prosecution checklists.
  • Contacting USPTO as needed during prosecution.
  • Checking the PTO rules and procedures (MPEP, CFR) and communicating them to others within the law department.
  • Assisting with patent-related search requests as needed.
  • Working with in-house counsel, outside counsel, inventors, and business executives as required.
  • Assisting in an administrative capacity by performing various administrative functions within the patent department, including:
  • Calendar management, scheduling travel, processing expense reports, meeting/event planning, handling teleconference and conference room setups, and assisting with onboarding new hires.

Qualifications

Education:

  • At least an Associate's degree is required.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • A minimum of 2-4 years within the patent industry experience is required, with at least some interaction with patent applications and prosecution documents.
  • The individual should have strong organizational and planning skills, be able to work independently, be detail oriented, and have excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel is required.
  • Working knowledge of information technology and document management tools is required.
  • The position requires the ability to effectively work with all levels of company management, inventors, outside counsel and the United States Patent & Trademark Office, under minimum supervision of patent attorneys.
