Kapur, a full service Consulting Civil Engineering firm, is seeking a mid-level Public Involvement Specialist based in our Milwaukee office.
The position will support, assist, and advise project managers and clients in public involvement, outreach and communications for public works and infrastructure projects. The position may also support other Kapur communications efforts as needed. This person will establish and maintain relationships with project stakeholders, including public officials, property owners, and businesses affected by projects, under the supervision of Kapur project managers and the Communications Department Manager.
Typical project activities include public meetings, open houses, special events, training, and material development and distribution (brochures, handouts, newsletters, mailers, website content, and other materials to project audiences).
Duties:
- Implement effective public outreach strategies for high-profile transportation projects
- Research and write content for a variety of communication channels, including websites, social media, talking points, presentations, marketing materials, and media notifications
- Serve as a liaison between project teams and the community
- Develop strong client relationships and assist with business development activities
- Take the initiative and ownership of public involvement tasks to develop effective strategies that solicit feedback and input from the public
- Coordinate and participate in public meetings and community events with various neighborhood groups or other stakeholders as assigned. Availability to work some nights, as needed
- Guide responses to public inquiries and escalated stakeholder issues
- Implement strategic social media outreach plans, including researching, writing, and vetting various posts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
- Attend virtual or in-person external project, agency, and community meetings to provide public involvement updates and identify public involvement issues
- Track and maintain records and reports pertaining to public involvement meetings, public hearings, and outreach events
- Interact clearly and concisely with a variety of diverse audiences
- Other responsibilities as assigned or required by Kapur and our clients
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Communications/Public Relations, Marketing, Political Science, Journalism, or related field
- 5-10 years of communications experience
- Outstanding oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Superior organizational and time management/prioritization skills
- Ability to understand and translate complex, technical information into easy-to-understand content for public consumption
- High attention to detail; proofreading skills
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Deadline driven with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
- Ability to work effectively with teams and demonstrate initiative to lead tasks
- Ability to work well with the public and interact effectively with all organizational levels, including senior management
Preferred Qualifications:
- Work experience in public information and communication for the A/E/C industry; basic construction knowledge
