Instrument Operator duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Perform field survey tasks associated with the firm’s land development projects, including control surveys, boundary surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, topographic surveys, construction stakeout, etc.
  • Perform field survey tasks independently with robotic total station and GPS systems.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate surveying equipment, including electronic total station, data collector, and GPS equipment, in order to measure distances, elevations, and angles.
  • Gather field survey data through use of conventional and Global Positioning System (GPS) methods.
  • Learn and utilize 3D laser scanning technology for accomplishing surveys when feasible.
  • Prepare field notes and drawings.
  • Perform office survey tasks, including analysis of field data, construction stakeout computations, grade sheets, etc. Ensure that work is correct and that all work is being accomplished according to schedule.
  • Communicate project status and issues to others on the project team.
  • Participate in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, resident engineers, and contractor representatives. Configure and operate instruments and measuring devices needed to complete field surveying.
  • Maintain clear, concise and accurate field notes of distances, angles and other field data. Create field instrument inventory and maintenance and calibration list.
  • Develop basic training schedule and checklist for new survey instrument operator employees. Train new instrument operators in use of instruments, data recording and theory.
