What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transcriptionist position at KATMAI?
SUMMARY
This position transcribes recorded oral interviews of senior military personnel into an approved Microsoft Word format. Interviews may be unclassified or include classified up secret level material and contain military jargon and frequent use of military acronyms. Typical interviews are between 30 and 60 minutes in length and are frequently conducted in a field environment which may introduce undesirable background noise, thereby complicating the transcription task. In addition to transcribing, the incumbent maintains a log of pending and completed interviews. The incumbent interfaces with collection personnel to resolve issues related to difficult to hear portions of a recording.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Normative rate of transcription is approximately 6 hours per hour of interview including time allocated for quality assurance review.
- Catalogue and archive lessons learned records, documents, and other electronic data in both the classified (SECRET) and unclassified/FOUO systems.
- Provides transcription of 350 to 400 recorded oral interviews each year. Each one-hour interview requires approximately 6 hours of transcription to include time for quality assurance.
- Transcribes oral interviews per established priorities, retrieves recordings from Marine Corp campaign of Learning Information System (MCCoLIS), uses “Start/Stop” software and foot pedal to listen to recordings and transcribe into word format.
- Maintains transcription log of pending and completed interviews.
- Catalogues and archives lessons learned records, documents, and other electronic data in both the classified (SECRET) and unclassified/FOUO systems.
- Participates in weekly operations meeting to apprise team of interview status/issues.
- Provides training on interview techniques related to ensuring appropriate sound quality and minimizing/eliminating background noise.
- Assists senior analyst with DIVIDs searches for imagery related to their collections.
- Conducts other administrative duties as directed by On-Site PM.
- Maintains regular and punctual attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
MIMINUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Civilian Education: Associates of Arts Degree.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid secret security clearance. (US Citizenship Required)
- Professional experience commensurate with Marine Corps E-7.
- Experience with MCCOLIS and/or MCLLP.
- Must have an intermediate knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must be able to work independently with little or no supervision, be exceedingly well organized, flexible.
- Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Demonstrated understanding of military operations terminology.
- Able to interact and effectively communicate with Marine Corps senior officers and government civilian personnel.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills.
- Proficient in Acrobat Publishing Tools (Adobe Creative Suites).
- Strong organizational skills and detail oriented.
- Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; monitors own work to ensure quality.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequent sitting, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, and seeing up close, at a distance, along the periphery, with depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; occasional walking or standing, occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs. Continuous use of audio equipment requiring keen audio acuity in order to differentiate sounds across the audible frequency spectrum at very low volume.

Work is performed in an office setting. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities, and abilities.
WORK SCHEDULE
20 - 40 hours per week. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project. Extended work hours will be coordinated as this flexibility is required dependent upon the needs of the government or as described for specific tasks herein.
