POSITION SUMMARY
Seeking an enthusiastic, creative, tech-savvy, service-oriented Teen Librarian to join the staff at Kendall Young Library. You will plan and coordinate teen programming (grades 6-12) and be responsible for teen collection development. Additionally, this position provides reference services for adults and teens; helps patrons use our digital and physical resources; and assists with publicity for the library.
Kendall Young Library is a forward-thinking, rural library rooted in a rich history in Webster City, Iowa. As a smaller library (town population around 8,000), our staff have the opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects and tasks.
SCHEDULE
This is a full-time position with 40 hours per week which will require day, night, and weekend hours (1 evening shift per week and 1 Saturday shift per month).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Teen Services
- Takes a leadership role in developing, implementing and evaluating the overall Teen services program, from 6th grade-12th grade, including summer reading program.
- Collaborate with Children’s Librarian in developing programming, especially for youths from 4th grade to 6th grade and families.
- Ensures the library's collections include relevant print and digital resources aimed at the specific interests and needs of Teens in the community.
- Makes recommendations for additional programming and learning supplies to be purchased.
- Works in partnership to develop the library’s online presence related to services for Teens.
- Advocates for youths and youth services with other community agencies. Collaborates with schools and other agencies to serve youth.
- Assists with evaluating library needs and formulating short- and long-range plans to meet goals and objectives associated with library plans.
- Maintains a pleasant, inviting, safe environment for Teens.
- Attends professional library conferences, seminars and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions.
- Compiles statistical data regarding use of Teen services.
- Assists Director with the preparation of the departmental annual budget request.
Reference
- Work the Reference Desk 20 hours per week providing reference and readers’ advisory service to adults and teens.
- Provides prompt, courteous and direct assistance to patrons with basic information regarding use of library materials, equipment, and services.
- Instruct patrons in use of library resources, particularly accessing online resources with digital devices.
- Assist patrons with genealogy searches and use of the library’s local history collection and digital newspaper archive.
- Promote library services through tours, demonstrations, talks, and displays.
- Serve as the “person in charge” in the absence of a Supervisor.
- Perform copy cataloging of Teen materials.
Publicity
- Take the lead in managing social media accounts for the library to engage the community and promote the library and its services.
- Assist in creating publicity materials for the library, including flyers, email newsletters, press releases, and newspaper columns.
Perform other related duties as assigned
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Master’s Degree in Library Science (MLS or MLIS) preferred. New graduates and currently enrolled master’s students encouraged to apply.
- Prior experience working with teens highly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work with Teens and the ability to create a welcoming environment for the public.
- Knowledge of Teen literature and ability to select and utilize it to encourage a love of reading.
- Knowledge of current trends in library services for and with Teens.
- Ability to plan and implement reading incentive programs and other Teen activities.
- Able to learn and stay current with emerging technology, including digital media.
- Knowledge and understanding of reference tools, research skills, general literature and of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals and philosophy of services.
- Thorough knowledge of micro-computing applications, Internet searching techniques, print and electronic youth reference sources and applications.
- Committed to excellence in customer service to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, patrons, or community members.
- Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, patrons, user groups, community organizations, volunteer groups and to serve the public courteously.
- Spanish language ability is a plus.
ESSENTIAL PHYICAL ABILITIES
- Performs manual labor while participating in the completion of various operational tasks, such as setting up tables for programming.
- Must be able to lift and carry books or boxes weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Able to push a fully loaded book-cart weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Periodic walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, required in normal course of performing essential duties.
- Talking, hearing and seeing are essential to effective performance of the job.
- Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required for most essential functions.
COMPENSATION
- $40,000-$44,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
- Vacation and sick leave (15 vacation days, 2 personal days, 7 paid holidays and 12 sick days per year)
