By joining our Kentucky Department of Highways/District 10/Project Delivery and Preservation Branch ii/West Liberty Section located in Morgan Co Unit as a Highway Technician II, you’ll have the opportunity to coordinates construction or maintenance projects, responsible for monitoring and verifying equipment rental usage contracts. Oversees activities on small construction or maintenance projects and performs tasks requiring the application of technical principles in the design, development or review small engineering projects while learning to perform more advanced technical functions.

Holders of the Highway Technician II position will complete tasks such as:
  • Monitor construction or maintenance highway projects.
  • Perform tasks requiring the application of technical principles in the design, development, or review of small engineering projects.
  • May coordinate crew assignments.
  • Monitor and verify equipment rental usage contractors.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Monitoring construction or maintenance highway projects
  • Monitor highway projects of contractors.
  • Developing and review small engineering highway projects.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Construction and maintenance of highway work.
  • Working with highway contractors.
  • Reviewing engineering highway projects.
  • Overseen small highway construction projects.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have eight years of construction or highway maintenance experience.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in Engineering Technology with completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Civil Engineering Technology Scholarship Program will substitute for six (6) years of highway related experience in construction or maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 3 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
