Job Description/Summary:

The Job Captain plans, coordinates, directs and is responsible for managing and scheduling Design staff and consulting engineers that are producing Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents for architectural projects. The Job Captain assists the Sr, Job Captain and Project Architects by directly balancing the technical requirements and quality standards of projects against the labor budgets and deadline realities of projects.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes/manages, leads and controls the production of architectural drawings.
  • Responsible to the Sr. Job Captain and Project Architects (Architectural Project Manager, Project Architect and Sr. Project Architect) for direction of the team production and budget goals on individual projects.
  • Manages and holds accountable Design staff to project schedules and budgets. Acts in a supervisory position in providing and reviewing work assignments.
  • Interfaces and coordinates with consultants. Coordinates the consultants’ work into the architectural drawings. Assists project architect in managing consultant’s compliance to contractual obligations.
  • Provides continuous review of project documents for quality and accuracy and provides markup sheets to project team for revision. Confirms corrections and coordinates final documents for each phase of work.
  • Assists the Project Architects with reviews, coordination, and update of project specifications in coordination with project drawings.
  • Assists the Project Architect and Construction Administrator by reviewing submittals and answering questions, creating & issuing supplemental documents during the Bidding and Construction phases of a project.
  • Mentors or coaches staff including Designer I, Designer II and Designer III positions.

Knowledge required:

  • Law and Government – Have a detailed knowledge and correct application of building codes and regulations governing construction.
  • Building and Construction – Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings / facilities.
  • Mathematics – Knowledge of algebra, geometry, statistics, and their application. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, area, circumference and volumes.
  • Administration and Management – Knowledge of business and management principles involved in resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods and coordination of people and resources.
  • English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Computers and Electronics – Working knowledge of companies’ computer software, including AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, PCMX, Contract Manager, P6, and Microsoft Project.
  • Customer and Personal Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.

  • Physical Abilities - Employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear and is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop kneel or crouch.   • Environment – Ability to withstand exposure to air-conditioned/heated office environment and low noise levels from office equipment and voices.

Minimum Education and/or Experience, Certifications/Licenses required:

  • Associate degree from Community College or Technical School.
  • Five (5) years or more of Architecture practice experience.
