Position Summary

The Director of Facilities (KAP), under the direction of the Superintendent, is responsible for the strategic direction and day-to-day management of the Kodiak Island Borough School District’s facilities. Working closely with all building Administrators, the Director of Facilities is responsible for the safe maintenance, repair or replacement of KIBSD Facility equipment and systems, to provide the opportunity for maximum education quality, while supporting the policies, goals and objectives of the District. This position is responsible for the following departments: Maintenance & Operation, Custodial, and Community Schools.

Qualifications

  • Must possess an extensive and progressively responsible background in mechanical, building trades, technical areas, and a strong knowledge of the applicable building, fire, and safety codes as well as hazard and safety precautions.
  • Shall possess 3-4 years of successful administrative, managerial skills, and demonstrated ability to direct all facets of diverse maintenance and operations programs.
  • High School diploma required. Post-secondary training in at least one and preferably more than one supportive field or equivalent job experience required.
  • Experience in reading and following blueprints, diagrams, sketches, specifications, codes, and operating and maintenance manuals.
  • Knowledge of computer utilization in preventive energy facilities management and inventory control.
  • Must possess an AHERA Alaska State Certified Asbestos Inspector Manager Card or obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to research and analyze facilities repair and maintenance options.
  • Ability to work well with public, students, staff and parents.
  • Ability to safely, regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to handle and safeguard confidential materials and information and make sound decisions according to established policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid State of Alaska motor vehicle operator’s license with no insurance restrictions.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates staff responsibilities and activities.
  • Acts as and completes the duties of official AHERA LEA representative and Management Planner in accordance with regulations.
  • Provides troubleshooting of facilities-related issues, including communication to customers.
  • Provides project management over all in-house facilities initiatives; plans and coordinates all projects managed by Kodiak Island Borough and associated contractors within KIBSD facilities.
  • Provides scheduled inspections and establishes preventive maintenance programs for fixed properties of the district.
  • Monitors District-wide energy usage and works with unit administrators and staff in the development of energy conservation measures.
  • Coordinates scheduling relative to logistic support of village schools (i.e., fuel, freight, and supplies).
  • Submits annual prioritized lists of capital projects and small projects along with scheduled summer work.
  • Assists in preparing State Capital Improvement Project (CIP) and Grant Reimbursement Applications.
  • Coordinates District Wide Safety for the Accident Prevention Program and Emergency Response.
  • Works with government and regulatory agencies to assure district compliance in facility related matters.
  • Chairs Facilities Review Committee.
  • Recruits, interviews, and recommends for hire suitable candidates for employment within the Facilities staff.
  • Coordinates storage of and disposal of all surplus equipment.
  • Handles and safeguards confidential materials and information; making sound decisions according to established policies and procedures.
  • Accessible after hours to return to work for emergencies.
  • Other duties as assigned from time to time.
