JOB TITLE: Para Educator IV – Severely Handicapped Services

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Director of Education Support Services; Principal, Teacher and District Nurse, the Para Educator IV abides by School and District policies and provides academic, therapeutic, medical and social instruction and assistance to individuals or small groups of IEP identified Severely Handicap students, including but not limited to those having autism spectrum disorder, multi-handicapped, blind, deaf, orthopedic and other health impairments. The Para-educator IV will monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance, implement high structured behavior intervention plans, provide for or assist student in developing various self-help skills, including hygiene, eating, social, community, vocational and leisure/recreational skills and the use of school transportation or public transportation. The Para Educator IV may be required to assist in work areas including but not limited to classrooms, learning laboratories, campus and cafeteria supervision and assist in services including but not limited to monitoring student behavior, health duties (basic first aid etc.), 1:1 assistance and supervision, toileting and other related activities. The Para Educator IV also communicates regularly with staff regarding student needs and performance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience):

  • High School Education or Equivalent
  • Demonstrated proficiency in basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills, as required by EC 45344.5 and 45361.5.
  • AA Degree; or 48 post high school units; or passage of NCLB Para Test

ABILITY TO:

  • Interact effectively and positively with students; staff; parents and general public
  • Perform duties and show initiative with little or no supervision
  • Interpret and apply district/school rules and policies with good judgment
  • Effectively work in an atmosphere characterized by frequent changes
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Work as a team member with the teacher and other site personnel.
  • Speak Spanish desirable

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THIS POSITION MAY INCLUDE:
1. Work closely with teacher or ESS director in order to assure student is achieving IEP goals.
2. Assist in preparation of classrooms for technological and instructional use.
3. Assist in supervision of student activities, academic, therapeutic and social. Keep student records of activities performed. Assist in correcting papers and in filing and cataloging materials.
4. Assist individual or small groups of students (K-12) as directed by teacher
5. Perform duties with students 1:1 under direction of Administrator, Teacher or ESS Director per IEP.
6. Assist teacher with school-wide responsibilities.
7. Assist site administrator in maintaining a safe school facility
8. Prepare and set out playground or campus supplies, materials and equipment as needed.
9. Supervise SH students in the lunchroom, or during playground or campus activities.
10. Assist instructional staff with supervision at special events and activities
11. Assist with transition activities throughout the day; including but not limited to escorting students to and from buses, or supervision during bus loading times
12. Participate in professional development activities such as restraint training or other activities as appropriate
13. Breakfast, lunch and snack preparation, pickup and assist with feeding as needed
14. Assist students in developing independent travel skills on and off campus including but not limited: walking from classroom to classroom, getting on and off a bus, walking field trips to stores; proper use of seatbelts; safety procedures and other related activities.
15. Student hygiene assistance including but not limited to; bathing, showers, laundry, toileting, diapering, monthly cycles and bodily functions
16. Assist students who are not independent or mobile in their daily activities
17. Participate in PE classes for severely handicapped and support students in mainstream classrooms.
18. Assist and support students in life skills including but not limited to: cooking, cleaning, personal hygiene etc.
19. Use equipment as appropriate including but not limited to; standers, wedges, wheelchairs splints, body jackets, braces, Hoyer lifts, sideliners etc. to assist / transfer non ambulatory students and physically restricted students properly.
20. CPR; Basic First Aid, Universal precautions
21. Perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING HOURS AND PERIOD:
Unless otherwise provide in the collective bargaining agreement between the Konocti Unified School District and the members representing group, the holiday, vacations, sick leave, lunch period and breaks are as provided by law. The working hours as per assigned per day by the Educational Support Services Director in agreement with the collective bargaining unit and approval of the Superintendent.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned duties and responsibilities of this job description are the following essential physical requirements:

1 Seldom = Less than 25% 3 Often = 51-75%
2 Occasional = 25%-50% 4 Very Frequent = 76% and above

4 a. Ability to work at a desk, conference table or in meetings of various configurations.
4 b. Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time up to estimated 3 miles per day.
4 c. Ability to see for purposes of reading laws and codes, rules and policies and other printed matter materials and observing students.
4 d. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels.
4 e. Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand normal conversation.
4 f. Ability to bend and twist, kneel and stoop, run and crawl.
4 g. Ability to reach in all directions.
4 h. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
