Winemaker Job Description
The person in this role will support Krissie Wines' winemaking, viticulture, operations, new product development, and research and development departments. They will help drive the company's strategic targets for wine operations and successfully execute projects within winemaking and across departments to create operational efficiencies, improve revenue, and enhance quality. The candidate will also guide process optimization by leveraging winemaking expertise and research. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of the entire winemaking process across various winery sizes, styles, and quality tiers, as well as possess high levels of creativity, problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and leadership qualities.
Winemaker Duties
- Oversee daily cellar operations for Krissie Vineyards to meet production requirements and schedules.
- Perform routine operation of pumps and filters to racks and transfers.
- Work with general manager to create harvest billing for grape sales and oversee monthly billing during the off season.
- Manage inventory from farm to bottle.
- Oversee and manage bottling operations and record keeping.
- Generate work orders to communicate specific winemaking instruction to cellar staff.
- Create timelines to achieve wine production goals.
- Review completed work orders to ensure accurate and compliant record keeping.
- Create job descriptions for seasonal harvest enologists and oversee their hiring and training.
- Design and implement experimental lots and coordinate analyses to substantiate results.
- Oversee production of wine including fermentation and ageing protocols and blending decisions.
- Perform chemical additions and inoculations.
- Maintain barrel and wine health through so2 additions, toppings, racking and filling.
- Collaborate with grower relations and vineyard management team to ensure grapes are grown in conformance with expectations and to authorize vineyard releases for harvest as well as making picking decision based on analysis and grape tasting.
- Work with vineyard manager to ensure proper planning, planting, grafting, and maintenance are given to vines.
- Partner with general manager to present the wines, their competitive advantage and explain the differentiation with market competitors.
- Work with general manager in the promotion of the brand by hosting events and tasting with wine critics.
- Create technical sheets such as tasting notes and trainings for the DTC, sales and marketing teams.
- Assist with the preparation of and effective management of the annual winery budget; keep COGS aligned with plan.
- Work with general manager on 702 filings
- Role model safety and compliance behaviors. Support cross-functional teams with New York winery.
- Look out for team morale, celebrate success.
- Supervise and mentor cellar staff for advancement within the business and achievement of business goals.
- Ensuring glass, corks, capsules, and labels are on hand for all bottling.
- Work with general manager on COLA submissions.
- Keep case goods organized and compliant.
· Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers.
· Demonstrated ability to coordinate, help document workflow, and work with little supervision.
Education and Experience
· Must be at least 21 years of age.
· Must have 5 years of winemaking experience.
· Outstanding organizational management, and communication skills.
· Keen understanding of major aspects of winemaking, laboratory procedures, bottling and production workflow.
· Advanced skills in Excel and Word.
· Ability to lift 45 lbs. daily.
· Forklift certification
Winemaker Salary and Benefits
$60,000-80,000 depending on experience
