La Jolla Country Day School sits on a 24-acre campus in the heart of University City in San Diego, CA.  From the Early Childhood Center to the Upper School, we offer students a safe environment to explore, exchange thoughts and ideas, make mistakes, challenge the status quo, develop a work ethic, and grow to become the best versions of themselves. 

The director of security is responsible for the physical safety and security of our campus, including all people and property.  The director supervises contracted campus security and ensures appropriate security coverage of all student activities, athletic events, and select parent functions.  Responsibilities also include assisting with injuries and enforcing rules of LJCDS parent/student handbook and the employee handbook.  They will also regularly patrol campus and report use and misuse of facilities to the assistant head of school for operations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a visible security presence on campus for students, faculty and staff, parents, and members of the general public.
    • Monitor daily campus activity.  Enforce traffic & loitering laws, school rules, regulations & policies regarding non-student and unauthorized persons on and around the campus. 
      • Assist in directing traffic and supervises all drop off and pick up daily.  Review the current traffic and parking situation on campus and implement any improvements while managing all gates and schedule for both interior and exterior. 
      • Manage all identification badges for visitors, parents, and employees. This also includes parking stickers for all cars on campus.
      • Maintain a security log for all safety and security incidents and property loss or missing items. Coordinates any needed investigation.
      • Responsible for ensuring that surveillance cameras are monitored for purposes of providing additional security & protection for students, staff, and faculty as well as physical and intellectual property.
    • Schedule and supervise the contracted security guards and daily assignments.  Keep a daily security log and provide daily procedures and assignments with a calendar of events.
    • Maintain constant two-way radio communication with administration and guards.
    • Assist with all issues related to security, including policies, educating the community, and campus master planning.  
      • Assist with any updated security plans and/or policies including disaster preparedness. 
      • Coordinate all emergency preparedness and procedures such as lock down, fire, and disaster drills.
      • Investigate and report illegal activity or incidents that occur on campus to the San Diego Police Department and coordinate with division leaders.
      • Generate safety and security reports and keep documentation for all incidents on campus. This includes being a mandated reporter for student safety.
      • Work with campus administration and division leaders regarding safety and security concerns and campus events.  
  • Liaison with the San Diego Police Department, the University of California San Diego Police Department, other law enforcement agencies, and the San Diego Fire Department. Subject to on-call 24/7 alarm monitoring.
  • Manage all school facility use
    • Serve as the main point of contact with our event management system.  Review and follow up on all event requests - approve/decline/request additional information/request further support from leadership
    • Coordinate with Operations team to ensure requests are completed accurately and timely
    • Set up annual key dates and support academic calendaring team
    • Assist enrichment and club sport programs with room and field reservations

  • Noise level is usually moderately quiet; however, variations in noise level may occur when the employee attends school functions such as assemblies, school dances, and other events
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to work at desk and computer screen for extended periods of time
  • Ability to turn, bend and reach

Physical presence on campus is required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this role.

Position Requirements

This person must have a good working knowledge of school operations and safety and security for a school Pre K-12 grade.  Experienced school resource officer experience is desired.  A minimum education of a bachelor’s degree is required.  Medical training or CPR certification is desired.  

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Google Workspace and Mircrosoft Office, and be able to learn to use other applications and hardware (Apple TV, On Record, Blackboard, etc.).

All school personnel must successfully complete a fingerprint background check through Live Scan and provide current tuberculosis clearance.

Salary Range: $85,000-$130,000 annualized. The salary offer to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience, training, practical knowledge, and education.
