Our Health Professions Department is seeking to expand its pool of part-time faculty to teach Massage Therapy.

The primary responsibility of the Massage Therapy Instructor is to provide quality teaching in a full range of community college Massage Therapy courses.

  • Beyond the required education and experience, instructors must have a passion for what they teach and have teaching styles that support student success. Instructors are responsible for following Division and College procedures in support of teaching and learning.
  • This is an application pool posting for 2024. The assigned location for this position is at the Lane Community College’s main campus located in Eugene, Oregon.

Required QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education:
  • Completion of an accredited Massage Therapy certification program.
  • Have evidence of completion of a course on teaching adults, or one (1) year of experience teaching adults in any of the following:
    • As faculty in a massage therapy program
    • In a staff development role
    • As a massage therapy administrator


Required Experience:
  • At least two (2) years professional experience as an LMT, with at least one (1) year in hands-on professional practice in a board approved massage therapy clinic/facility.

Licensure or Certification Requirements
  • Registered with the Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists (OBMT) and holds a current, unencumbered Massage license in Oregon.
  • Current certification in CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers and First Aid, or the ability to obtain it prior to employment.

Conditions of Employment:
The following vaccines are required at the time of employment:
  • Hepatitis B (Hep B) series with titer to confirm immunity
  • Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap)
  • Varicella
  • Tuberculosis (TB) IGRA Blood test or chest x-ray
  • Successful applicants are required to complete a 10-panel urine drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.

Preferred QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education
  • Completed 25 hours of continuing education. The continuing education hours must be from the following topics and within the scope of the license:
    • Massage and bodywork techniques;
    • Use of thermal modalities, topical preparations, over-the-counter massage tools;
    • Active and passive range of motion and stretching techniques;
    • Assessment of client’s soft tissue, posture, and movement patterns;
    • Massage and bodywork business practices;
    • Anatomy and physiology of the human body;
    • Kinesiology of the human body;
    • Pathology of the human body;
    • Professional Ethics, Boundaries or Communication;
    • Cultural competency as defined in ORS 413.45;
    • Body mechanics;
    • Somatic education;
    • Basic Life Support (BLS);
    • Pain Management as provided by the Oregon Pain Management commission (OPMC).
    • Massage and bodywork instructor training.
    • Participation in instructor supervised/unsupervised, formal learning courses, seminars, self-study, and workshops.


Preferred Experience
  • Prior experience teaching Massage Therapy in the classroom or clinical setting.
  • Experience with Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists standards, accreditation, and continuing education.
  • Experience with instruction strategies, including both educational theory and technique.

Position Purpose:
The Massage Therapy instructor position is essential in training and forming highly qualified and professional massage therapists by sharing their experience, expertise, industry knowledge, and passion for the job. They will be responsible for delivering comprehensive instruction, designing engaging lesson plans, and providing guidance and support for students to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to fully succeed in the field of massage therapy in accordance with Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists’ standards in preparation for licensing. Release time is provided to the instructor to perform administrative duties necessary to meet requirements of program accreditation, credentialing, and/or federal and state regulations.

Essential Functions:
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive and engaging lesson plans that align with the learning objectives.
  • Provide theoretical and practical instruction and employ strong classroom management skills, including independent judgment, subject matter expertise, interpersonal skills, and knowledge of teaching theory and methodologies.
  • Demonstrate and model proper techniques, safety practices, and ethical standards in massage therapy.
  • Ensure students develop requisite entry-level knowledge, skills, and competencies to sit for certification or licensure and/or work in the field.
  • Advise, assist, and tutor students, and connect them with available resources to support their learning.
  • Supervise and provide hands-on guidance to students during practical sessions and clinical practice.
  • Identify and address individual learning needs and support students who may require it.
  • Create a positive, inclusive learning environment that fosters student engagement, participation, and growth.
  • Assess student progress through evaluations, examinations, and practical assessments, providing constructive feedback to support their development.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends, advancements, and new techniques in massage therapy to ensure the curriculum remains relevant and applicable.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe classroom and laboratory environment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to the improvement, development, and continuous enhancements of the Massage Therapy program.
  • Collaborate with the Non-Credit Project Coordinator on recruitment, student concerns, scheduling, information dissemination, and other pertinent matters related to the program.
  • Effectively communicate with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.

Supervision Statement:
Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

Works under the general direction of the Dean of Health Professions, Health and Physical Education and the Associate Dean/Director of Nursing.

Physical Demands/Working Environment:
This position works indoors and is exposed to usual office working conditions that include office noises and interruptions, such as printers, telephones, and visitors. This position requires that an employee is able to sit or stand for extended periods of time; bend, kneel, stoop,reach, and manipulate objects; perform cognitive and psychometric work for extended periods of time. Remain on their feet for extended periods of time. This position may work with individuals who may bein crisis. Work may require transporting materials up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Assist students in positioning patients. Work safely.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the OBMT Massage Licensing Competencies (Chapter 34, 334-010-0047) standards of knowledge and skills relevant to the practice of massage and bodywork.
