Larimer County Sheriff's Office is seeking a diligent individual to be a Firearms Examiner. This employee performs forensic physical and/or chemical examinations of firearms and tool mark evidence. They perform a variety of professional crime laboratory/forensic duties and forensic analysis including recognition, documentation through digital photography, video recording, report creation, collection of physical evidence, and reconstruction of events as required.
Please note: this position operates off-site at the Northern Colorado Regional Forensic Laboratory in Weld County (Greeley, CO).

Essential Functions
- Responsible for the recognition, identification, documentation, and scientific collection of all physical evidence pertinent to the investigation of a criminal act.
- Applies general theories of firearms analysis as it relates to modern laboratory techniques, practices, and procedures used in a forensic laboratory.
- Assures compliance with laboratory safety procedures. Emphasizes compliance of handling hazardous materials and evidence preservation supporting the other forensic disciplines.
- Communicates verbally and in writing scientific thoughts in a concise and understandable manner to audiences from a variety of backgrounds.
- Operates and understands laboratory equipment, techniques, and technology used to examine firearms and toolmark evidence.
- Maintains and assures confidentiality.
- Collects trace evidence.
- Prepares sketches and diagrams to include dimensions of the scene and to establish location of evidence and relationships of all relevant data.
- Prepares detailed reports and documentation for investigative use and court proceedings.
- Prepares, processes, and maintains a variety of written reports and records pertaining to lab processes and activities.
- Advises law enforcement personnel at crime scenes to ensure continuity and preservation of evidence.
- Appears in court as an expert witness as required.
- Processes evidence and coordinates with the Colorado Bureau of Investigations or other law enforcement and forensic agencies.
- Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes.
- Provides technical and professional assistance upon request.
Nonessential Functions
- When a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of Commissioners, all Larimer County employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker.
- Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job.
- Qualifications
- Required: bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with study in forensics or other hard science.
- Required: one (1) year experience performing crime scene and/or laboratory duties associated with the processing of firearms or tool mark evidence in a law enforcement agency.
- Required: possession of a valid driver's license by date of hire.

An offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
