Lasell University invites applications for the 12-month, full-time position of Crew Coach. Lasell’s 50-acre campus is located in Newton, MA, a community located ten miles west of Boston. The co-educational institution, offering professionally oriented baccalaureate and master’s degree programs, has an enrollment of 1450 full-time undergraduate students. Lasell Crew rows out of the Stoller Boathouse, located on the upper Charles River and a ten-minute walk from most campus buildings.
The Crew Coach will join a full-time, professional leadership staff of nine working in the Department of Athletics. The Athletic Department is housed in the Division of Enrollment and Marketing. Responsibilities include directing, organizing and administering all aspects of a co-ed club crew program with the goal of developing NCAA Division III rowing programs. In addition, the position is responsible for all aspects of the daily operations of the Lasell University Stoller Boathouse.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Crew Coach will direct all facets of a club rowing program with emphasis on recruitment/retention of appropriate student-athletes.
- Specific tasks include, but are not limited to: training and competition preparation; scheduling of competitions, administering water safety program; budgeting; academic support; fundraising; supervision of assistant coach(es) and insuring the general welfare of the student-athlete.
- The Crew Coach will oversee the administration of Stoller Boathouse, including the scheduling of the three main tenants and coordination of community outreach with the expectation of securing partnerships and reliable revenue streams.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred.
- USRA Level 1 and 2 coaching certification, thorough understanding of USRA safety procedures, basic boatman skills (pitch, rigging measures, minor hull repairs) and knowledge of NCAA Division III philosophies is required.
- Previous coaching and/or rowing experience at the college level is strongly preferred.
The successful candidate should have strong connections in the rowing community; substantial understanding of rowing stroke mechanics for both sculling and sweep rowing; training program design; coxswain training, race strategy; athlete motivation and team building. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a commitment to the overall education of student-athletes; diversity equity and inclusion; a solid work ethic; the ability to work independently; strong organizational skills and the ability to interact positively and professionally within the department and the community.
