The Lee County Library System seeks a passionate, experienced library professional with proven leadership skills and an ability to motivate and inspire staff to become its next district manager. This individual is smart, strategic and innovative with experience in public library service delivery, project management, operational improvement and change management. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to blend traditional and leading-edge library services in an environment of continuous improvement while motivating staff working at multiple sites around the county.


Based out of Library Administration, the district managers work collaboratively and within their own assigned districts to support the library branch managers and staff in delivering high-quality library service. Reporting directly to the Manager of Public Services, district managers represent the mission and objectives of Library Administration through frequent visits to library branches and ongoing communication with branch managers and staff. They serve as a library administration contact point and leadership example for all staff within their assigned district, not just their direct reports. District managers support and supervise branch management staff in specified areas, including hiring, training, professional growth, performance management, productivity, quality, service, discipline, and terminations.


EXPECTED salary for this position is $90,000-$100,000.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Directly supervising, coaching, evaluating and mentoring branch managers 
  • Resolving complex customer issues in an empathetic manner. 
  • Overseeing the performance and development of frontline staff ensuring consistent operational practices between locations. 
  • Serving as an organizational leader, with a focus on operational improvement and change management as well as serving as a large-scale project manager. 
  • Working closely with other Senior Staff to develop initiatives and strategies to enhance the service priorities and goals for the library and the county. 
  • Explaining and administering library policies and procedures 
  • Actively seeking and participating in professional development opportunities and staying abreast of emerging technology and trends. 
  • Communicating and working effectively and tactfully with co-workers, sharing information and working cohesively as a team. 
  • Leading systemwide branch manager meetings.
Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree in Library or Information Science, or a closely related field from a graduate library school program accredited from an accredited graduate library school program.
  • Requires three years of librarian or closely related experience to include one year of supervisory experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record is required 

Preferred Requirements:

  • Three years of progressively responsible experience as a professional librarian managing a public library system or a department or division of a main library. 
  • Prefer a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an accredited graduate library school program. 
  • Prefer at least 5 years of related library experience. 
  • Prefer at least 4 years of supervisory experience. 
Supplemental Information
  • Knowledge of a variety of interests of patrons of different ages and backgrounds. 
  • Knowledge of library budgeting and related financial management practices 
  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the work of professional and clerical personnel. 
  • Ability to become proficient with existing technology systems, software and computer equipment used by the library system, adapt to new technology developments and changes, and learn teaching skills to assist patrons with technology. 
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment. 
  • Spanish speaking is a plus. Ability to relate positively to a diverse population, including children, teens, seniors and speakers of languages other than English. 
  • The County may require employees to make either a temporary, or long-term, permanent transfer to another library location to accommodate the organization's business needs. 
  • This position requires 80 Hours Bi-Weekly; hours and days will vary to include evenings, Saturdays and some Sundays 


EMERGENCY RESPONSE/RECOVERY ACTIVITIES: All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an Emergency as needed. During an Emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
