Purpose:

The Director for Student Engagement and Campus Life is responsible for providing leadership and administrative direction to provide a comprehensive and vibrant student engagement program that complements and supports the mission of Lincoln University of Missouri, which is an 1890, historically Black University. Reporting to the Chief Student Affairs Officer & Dean of Students, a top priority for this position is to create a student engagement program that promotes the diverse student body at Lincoln; however, ensuring that the programs and services developed fully amplify the HBCU framework for student engagement and success, but is also undergirded using a multi-cultural lens. The Senior Director will lead the areas of student activities, student organizations, the Campus Activity Board, the Student Government Association, the Royal Court, Greek Life, and other student focused organizations and activities.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Plans, implements, and assesses major campus events and traditions including New Student Orientation, Homecoming, Springfest, Coronation, and other major student engagement activities that have significant impact for enhancing student life and traditions that personify the legacy and importance of student traditions at Lincoln University.
  2. Develops and manages all aspects of the Scruggs University Centers (SUC) and its operations.
  3. Assists students with achieving their academic and co-curricular goals, which include mentoring, training, and supervising student leaders and staff.
  4. Leads and cultivates vibrant student activities and engagement program, through collaboration with faculty, staff, and students that positively contributes to student engagement, success, retention and to the overall mission of the University's mission as a historically Black university.
  5. Ensures for a continual focus on multiculturalism, while designing, planning, and implementing all student engagement activities and programs.
  6. Designs and implements student organizational leaders and advisor trainings, including details for student activities policies, procedures, budgetary matters, risk management, and other applicable university policies and procedures.
  7. Creates a culture of student engagement assessment, measuring annual goals, objectives, plans, and learning outcomes.
  8. Engages in University and community services by service on committee and collaborating with educational institutions and professional organizations for best practices.
  9. Participates in recruiting, enrollment, and retention events.
  10. Provides supervision for the Office of Student Engagement's staff (e.g. Student Engagement Coordinator, Greek Life Coordinator, and Graduate Assistants, etc.).
  11. Develops proactive marketing and communications processes to encourage student participation in planned activities, particularly focusing on them being a part of student life.
  12. Provides information about and advises staff and students on policies and procedures connected with the creation of new and existing clubs and organizations.
  13. Manages and develops the office budget in consultation with the Chief Student Affairs Officer and the Provost.
  14. Ensures the quality and equity of student engagement activities throughout the University.

Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

Other duties as assigned by the Chief Student Affairs Officer and Dean of Students.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, business or public administration and 5-7 years of experience leading and coordinating student engagement activities and programs. Doctoral degree desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

  1. Demonstrated knowledge of student engagement strategies and familiarity with student development theory and the ability to implement theory into practice in a leadership role.
  2. Familiarity with the sociological issues facing underrepresented and first-generation college students.
  3. Knowledge and experience in student services and affairs related technology implementation and use and its successful integration with existing student information systems.
  4. Superior interpersonal skills, complemented by the ability to build effective, collegial working relationships with a wide range of campus constituents that include students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.
  5. Proven excellence as a skilled and effective communicator, with the ability to write and speak professionally.
  6. Ability to adapt to many different situations, competing demands and demonstration of the highest level of service to students.
  7. A trusted professional with the ability to maintain confidential information.
  8. Excellent administrative, management, leadership, and project management skills.
  9. Demonstrated experience managing budgets, operations, and initiatives relative to student affairs and engagement.
  10. A strategic thinker, possessing the ability to research, evaluate, assess, and find solutions for ever-evolving student needs.
  11. Consistent evidence and demonstration of professionalism regarding decorum, dress, and relationships with colleagues both in and outside of the campus setting.
