This position supports the director of the Small Business Development Center with all administrative aspects of the center’s Spanish-speaking business outreach program. Common tasks include coordinating and planning trainings/workshops, event planning, direct client outreach via email, phone, and in-person, coordination, translation, development of training and program materials, creating Spanish promotions, and other duties as assigned. Assist Spanish-speaking small business owners in groups and on a one-to-one basis with a wide variety of business management challenges.
Required Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Associate degree plus two years of experience or education and work experience in business, project management, human resources, or marketing.
Knowledge and Skills: Excellent attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills and written/verbal communication. Communicate at a high level of proficiency in writing and verbally in both Spanish and English. Ability to listen well, ask questions, and explain concepts clearly. Ability to juggle competing priorities and meet deadlines with consistency. Commitment to creating opportunity for and working closely with people from diverse backgrounds, identities, nationalities, socio-economic statuses, and cultures. Ability to continuously learn complex business regulations, procedures, industry-specific requirements, and other resources. Experience with coordinating the details for events, workshops, or other programmatic elements. Ability to accommodate some evening and weekend commitments to meet the needs of small business owners.
Abilities: Must be able to independently prioritize and organize tasks in order to meet schedules and timelines. Must be able to interpret, explain, and apply college policies and procedures. Requires infusing a high level of confidentiality, discretion, and professional decorum. Requires the ability to recruit and motivate volunteers and student staff. Requires ability to use community-building technologies, such as social media and other networking technologies, including MS Office applications, Google Drive, etc.). Must be resilient and able to receive constructive criticism and feedback calmly and professionally. Must be able to operate general office equipment, including computers. Requires the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and community members. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities. Must be able to initiate problem-solving conversations and work through conflict effectively. Ability to manage situations with students who are upset or in distress.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Education and Experience: A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Preferred Skills: Experience with the small business community (whether that be owning a small business, managing a small business, consulting with small business owners, etc.) Demonstrated expertise in areas such as small business management, financing, marketing, business creation, succession planning, business growth, and other related areas. Demonstrated understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by Latino/a/x/Spanish-speaking small business owners and how to help them meet these challenges.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with little or no exposure to health and safety hazards. The work environment has continuous conversational noise and interruptions. Substantial time is spent working at a computer. Work hours may vary. Majority of work occurs at the Benton campus, with opportunity for some flex/remote work and community-based work as pre-determined by director of the Small Business Development Center. Routine daily shift with some evenings and weekends; fall, winter, spring, and summer terms.
Essential Duties:
- Collaborate closely with the SBDC director to carry out a LatinX/a/o small business strategy that will expand the reach of the center with underrepresented populations.
- Conduct focused outreach to Spanish-speaking communities through a variety of methods to advertise SBDC offerings and serve as a resource to LatinX clients. Outreach may include print, radio, in-person, email, text, etc. to spread awareness of SBDC offerings. Identify, develop, and network with local Hispanic stakeholders, resources, and organizations involved in entrepreneurial and economic development.
- Maintain well-documented client files and enter all client consulting/advising activity into online database and complete other necessary reports in a timely manner according to federal and state regulations. Regularly collect and document client economic impact information and success stories.
- Provide confidential consulting/advising services to Latino/a/x owners of small businesses and people considering business ventures.
- Interpret as required to help Spanish-speaking clients understand and access the resources of the Small Business Development Center. Translate materials from English into Spanish and vice versa as needed.
- Coordinate details of events for Spanish-speaking outreach to businesses including contacting community partners, creating agendas, and drafting Spanish promotional text.
- Maintain an awareness of both public and private sector resources, as well as regulations and business best practices, for small business owners and make appropriate referrals to those resources.
- Prepare training materials and deliver trainings, resources, and workshops in Spanish in person and virtually.
- Attend meetings with SBDC team (and other LBCC staff as needed) as well as any required state-level meetings or trainings for Oregon Small Business Development Center Network.
- Other duties as assigned.
