Job Description
We are seeking an Executive Director to help us execute on our purpose alongside our member organizations, technical working groups and community leaders. You’ll work side-by-side with these stakeholders as well as Linux Foundation teams to meaningfully and measurably execute on goals, and cultivate new and existing relationships to their fullest potential. You will hire and manage a team of direct reports, vendors and contractors to achieve organizational objectives. Most importantly, you’ll work closely with the Steering Committee, to whom you will report.
Job Role And Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for the success and growth of the project. In this role, you will develop strategic plans and oversee the execution of these plans, translating goals and objectives into daily tactical operations. You’ll lead staff, Steering Committee representatives, key member stakeholders, and the larger Overture Maps community to map the priorities and goals of the foundation to an effective deployment of the financial and talent contributions. Your work will drive the project’s adoption in the marketplace. Key responsibilities include:
Executive Management
- Advise the Steering Committee on Overture strategy and recommend plans and changes for the long term evolution of the project.
- Develop a budget to be approved by the Steering Committee, and manage expenses to that budget while providing regular budget reports to the Steering Committee.
- Manage the relationship between Overture and the Linux Foundation.
- Secure project resources, services, vendors, and contractors and ensure that those relationships are constructive and cost effective.
- Manage the trademark and licensing issues for Overture, working with legal counsel as needed.
- Oversee administrative management of Overture including functions such as accounting, personnel, policies, procedures, and so forth.
- Report to the Steering Committee on a regular basis, ensuring that agendas and minutes are correctly published and maintained for all Steering Committee meetings.
Growth & Community
- Manage the membership growth and continuity of Overture.
- Actively recruit new members at all levels of membership and ensure that members are engaged and contributing to the map data output.
- Manage the membership application process and the participation agreements
- Develop marketing and communications strategies to keep the community and membership informed of Overture activities.
- Develop strategies for events and other community activities.
Execution
- Set up and optimize systems to ensure technical execution of Overture’s goals.
- Assume overall responsibility for the Working Groups, ensuring that Working Groups are formed and operate effectively.
- Hire and manage technical staff as directed by the Steering Committee.
- Ensure that Overture has the required technical infrastructure to support the development and maintenance of the project’s data and technology.
Communications
- Act as the primary spokesperson for Overture, speaking on behalf of the project at events, to press, or other industry forums
- Develop an external communications plan to ensure growth and execution of Overtures goals, and manage or oversee public relations campaigns
Qualifications
The ideal candidates will have:
- Deep understanding of mapping and geospatial data, its market environment, players and trends.
- High level of executive functioning - you can manage multiple tasks and functions at once, operate in ambiguous situations, and focus quickly.
- Strategic planning skills and experience - you can develop a vision, and translate it into goals, strategies and tactics that others will understand and can execute on.
- Comfort engaging, pitching and recruiting companies to join, support, or contribute to the project, and the capacity to understand a prospective contributor’s reasons to participate.
- Comfort wearing multiple hats, and experience with hiring and/or managing resources as roles are identified and requisitioned.
- Strong oral and written communication skills: you write down action items, follow up with meeting notes, and have a penchant for documenting process and goals
- Strong presentation skills: you can tell clear, compelling stories and are unafraid of public speaking.
- Strong cooperative leadership skills: you understand the nuances required when working with volunteers
- Strong problem solving skills: you aren’t afraid of a little ambiguity, a hard problem, or a sticky situation and work productively to resolve issues
- Operational focus: you plan, coordinate, get sign off, prep documents and set agendas to help keep everyone in alignment.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, operate, and clearly communicate in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
- Experience working with open source communities: you understand the open source ecosystem and the challenges and opportunities it faces
- Willingness to travel and work remotely with a global team.
