SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs duties within the Pharmacy under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist according to written Pharmacy policies and procedures. Assist the Pharmacist in the preparation and distribution of medications. Responsible for the billing of pharmaceuticals. Maintains Department records and provides general clerical services, including database maintenance.
Shall become knowledgeable and abide by the Hospital policies and procedures, Personnel policies and procedures, and the Pharmacy Department policies and procedures.
REPORTS TO: Pharmacy Manager/ Pharmacist-in-Charge
SUPERVISES:
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS: All Hospital Departments and Medical Staff. Limited outside contact.
QUALIFICATIONS: National Pharmacy Technician Certification, CPhT, or willingness and ability to become certified. High School graduate.
Experience/Specialized Skills: None required. Previous pharmacy or medical experience desirable. Computer literate. Keyboard skills. Strong mathematics and analytical skills. Able to accept responsibility. Ability to work under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. Willing to work weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Regularly spends more than 50% of the working day standing or walking, frequently using stairways. Lifts, pushes or pulls light to average weight loads.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Visual acuity required as machines needing close visual attention are used. Occasional stress. Possible exposure to hazardous materials.
KEY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
Under the general supervision of the Pharmacy Manager/Pharmacist-in-Charge and within Hospital and departmental policies and procedures:
A) Deliver medication and supplies to Hospital areas. [M]
- Supply daily, nursing stations, medication storage areas and other areas.
- Supply Emergency Room according to Department policy.
- Deliver orders to medication areas, daily.
B) Retrieve orders, charges and other paperwork. [M]
- Retrieve, daily, night reports and census.
- At routine daily intervals, retrieve physician orders, billing forms, and other paperwork.
C) Prepare medications for dispensing under the direct supervision of a Pharmacist. [E]
- Fill patient cassettes, daily, accurately, & according to written policy.
- Check stock supplies on a daily basis.
- Prepare the daily cart exchanges.
- Prepare intravenous solutions, daily, according to written policy.
- Deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to the patient's age, physical ability and intellectual development. By demonstrating proficiency in assessment, treatment and adapting care to meet the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations.
D) Maintain the cleanliness of the Department. [E]
- Wash all counters every AM and every PM, and as needed throughout the day.
- Clean IV hoods prior to use and after use, according to policy.
- Maintain work areas in a neat and orderly manner at all times.
- Clean refrigerators & freezers according to Department schedule.
E) Assist in the maintenance of Department inventory and supplies. [E]
- Restock and maintain, daily, the picking station.
- Unpack, price, sticker with expiration date, and put away orders upon receipt.
- Rotate stock, as required.
- Inspect all assigned areas, according to policy, on a monthly basis.
- Participate in the control and reduction on un-useable medications.
- Including returning of these items for credit in a timely manner.
F) Responsible for all Department billing. [E]
- Complete and process all billing accurately, daily, according to written policy and procedure.
- Clarify billing entries with appropriate staff, as required.
- Update formulary price lists according to current method in a timely manner.
G) Maintain Department files and records and provide general clerical services. [M]
- Sort for processing, daily, the orders, bills and department forms.
- Distribute and file reports and records according to Department policy.
- Perform Department clerical duties, as required.
- Update various Department reference manuals in a timely manner.
H) Perform other duties which may be required. [M]
- 1-Perform other tasks, as Department requirements and services change.
- 2-Maintain annual continuing educational requirements. [E]

- Consider the employee's attendance and participation in staff meetings, in-service education sessions, formal training sessions, and (when applicable) external education opportunities.
