JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Director of Collection Management, this position performs acquisitions functions in the automated library system; performs copy cataloging of new materials; performs maintenance for accuracy of bibliographic and inventory control records on automated library system.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Cataloging and Acquisition
- Performs copy cataloging of new materials, following established bibliographic and local standards: searches bibliographic utility database; identifies best records for local use, edits and transfers records to local database.
- May create new bibliographic records in databases, following established standards.
- May assign location codes and call numbers according to established bibliographic and local standards.
- Performs maintenance for accuracy of bibliographic and inventory control records on automated library system. Identifies and/or corrects errors, or takes other appropriate action to resolve problems according to established procedures.
- May mend and perform new processing of books and other materials as necessary.
- May create and monitor orders; submit purchase orders to vendors; resolve problems with vendors and reconcile invoices.
- Maintains database for the renewal of periodicals for all 16 locations.
- Processes ILL transactions.
Other
- Responds to Helpdesk, email and telephone inquiries.
- Attend training and meetings as requested by Management.
- Creates spine labels and performs other inventory control tasks.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science or related field; three (3) years of experience working in a library; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Experience in the Technical Services/Collection Management department is preferred.
- Working knowledge of an integrated library system (ILS), preferably PINES, is required.
- Experience with OCLC ILL interface is required.
Licenses or Certifications:
Valid driver’s license and insurability required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of MARC record format; Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings.
- Working knowledge of PINES integrated library system: cataloging, acquisitions and circulation modules.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with G-Suite.
- Must have general knowledge of library procedures, materials and practices.
- Aptitude to work independently with significant attention to detail is very important in this role.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is typically performed with the employee sitting at a desk, standing for extending periods, or bending/stooping. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds routinely, climb ladders, climb stairs, stand for extended periods of time, extended walking within and outside branch locations, reach, bend, and stoop. Full range of hand and finger motion is required for data entry purposes. The ability to distinguish color is required for network wiring purposes. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
- Manual Dexterity: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Mental Acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees
- Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Typical office/library environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause uncomfortable periods of heat or cold. Some periods of elevated noise levels. Some stress related to the type of work being performed may be encountered e.g., pressure related to periods of high-volume activity and multiple demands.
The work week is a 40-hour work week. After Hours and holiday availability, while rare, is required.
