SUMMARY
The Director of Nursing has responsibility and accountability for the effective implementation of the philosophy, goals, policies, and procedures of the ASC. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the clinical and administrative management including planning, organizing, and directing the operation. This position will establish policies, procedures and departmental objectives. In this role you will report directly to the facility administrator.
Reporting directly to this position are: Registered Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Sterile Processing Technicians, and an OR Supervisor.
Principal Accountabilities
- The delivery of patient centered, cost efficient, safe, quality care by adhering to evidence based practice
- Follows Nurse Practice Act, State of PA Board of Nursing, accrediting and regulatory agency regulations regarding standards of care.
- Manages the daily staffing and flow of patients, including daily OR scheduling, add-on cases, etc.
- Professionally and courteously communicates with patient/family, physicians and staff, and outside agencies. Establish and collaborate effectively with patient/family and health care team.
Job Details
- Develops, implements and maintains an operating plan for nursing care that supports the goals and objectives of the Surgery Center.
- Use sound management principles to organize, plan, coordinate and control the flow of patients, activities/services, personnel and utilization of resources.
- Develops, monitors and communicates staffing schedules, and makes daily adjustments as necessary.
- Responsible for input and knowledge of the clinical staffing operating budget.
- Provides adequate levels of staff to ensure safe and effective nursing care.
- Resolves conflicts, mediates and ensures compliance with policies by employees and physicians.
- Develops agenda and coordinates members of Medical Advisory Board according to regulatory requirements.
- Ensures that all physician orders are carried out appropriately and timely; works collaboratively with ancillary staff.
- Maintain standard operating policies and procedures manual.
- Establish and follow clinical practice guidelines based on best practices and evidence-based practices.
- Monitor education development and required competencies for the department clinical staff.
- Coordinate, implement and maintain quality assurance programs.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state accreditation guidelines.
- Promptly and accurately reports all significant events to the Administrator and Compliance Officer.
- Manages infection control program, helps establish, interpret and implement standards of asepsis and infection control and monitors practice of all personnel concerned.
- Administers orientation training and development of all clinical staff to ensure that staff is competent to perform job duties and responsibilities.
- Ensures the availability of support services, supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care.
- Holds employees accountable for assigned responsibilities and individual goals and performance expectations through annual performance evaluations and timely documentation of performance.
- Works through HR and with Administrator to conduct interviews, recommend for hire, implement a progressive disciplinary process and recommend terminations as needed. Partners with Business Office Manager to keep personnel files up to date and completed.
- Meets/communicates regularly with the ASC Administrator to review and /or revise established goals and objectives.
- Assembles subject matter experts into teams to develop and update supply and equipment standards.
- Conducts monthly staff meetings and maintains minutes of proceedings.
- Serves as Employee Health Nurse and maintains employee medical files.
- Performs additional functions and duties as assigned.

- Consistently maintains open and positive communications with clinical personnel, Administrator, physicians and all others, with focus on team building & development.
- Strong patient-centered approach with emphasis on providing exemplary customer service.
- Maintains sensitivity and awareness of cultural and religious diversity when addressing patients, visitors, and co-workers.
Essential Qualifications
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and proactive; a strong team player who thinks critically in a fast-paced environment.
- Current PA license as Registered Nurse. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required. Masters Preferred.
- At least 2 years nursing supervisory experience.
- At least 5 years PACU/Pre-op or ER nursing experience.
- Current American Heart Association BLS/ACLS/PALS or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire.
- Strong computer & office skills including Microsoft office & electronic medical records (EMR).
