SUMMARY: Assure the safety of  pool users by preventing and responding to emergencies and by on-site supervision of lifeguards and other on-duty staff. The Head Lifeguard shall also be responsible for maintaining a high standard of facility cleanliness and maintenance through completion of duties as assigned by the pool Manager/ Aquatics Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following but no limited to:

  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations.
  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Complete all necessary records and reports.
  • Act as liaison between Recreation Coordinator and the Lifeguard staff.
  • Ensure that all staff members perform required duties, adhere to facility rules and standards, and maintain a high level of professionalism.
  • Assist with training staff for all aspects of job responsibilities, review and evaluate staff performance, document concerns and submit documentation to the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Demonstrate effective public relation skills. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective and desirable working relationships with other personnel and the general public. 
  • Open and close facility, including all pre-opening safety checks, proper care of register monies, back-up of patron tracking system, securing facility at closing.
  • Make daily safety/cleanliness inspection of pool facility. Analyze and correct hazards as applicable, report hazards and corrective steps taken to management.
  • Monitor all chemical readings and mechanical problems immediately. Clear pool and close facility if situation is uncorrectable and presents a safety hazard to patrons.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of Activities
  • Participate and assist with regular in-service training sessions.
  • Complete all additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

 SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Head Lifeguard supervises Lifeguards and participants/customers.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school education; or related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Previous lifeguard experience with thorough knowledge and skills of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, write and comprehend instructions and memos. Ability to write short correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to children, parents and community members and other employees of the organization.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Fingerprint and TB clearance are a condition of employment and must be obtained prior to start date American Red        Cross Lifeguard Training / First Aid / CPR-PR (May be obtained upon hire), Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training Instructor preferred, and Mandated          Trainings required, but may be obtained within 15 days of hire date.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; swim; run; squat; lift; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands over head and use arms; talk and hear.

 

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 50 pounds or more.

 

  • Endurance for frequent walking, standing, kneeling and swimming.

 

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Facilities may be noisy with very dynamic movement.
  • Individual is exposed to natural weather conditions that may vary from extreme sun to cold, wet rainy and windy conditions.
