MSCR Recreation Specialist - Sports

Program Description:

The purpose of this position is to develop, promote, maintain and supervise a variety recreational sports programs with an emphasis on youth instructional programs, camps and leagues.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise a number of part-time, seasonal employees that work in MSCR programs throughout the year.

Job Description & Duties:

  • Research, plan, design and implement a full range of adult and youth sports programs, with an emphasis on youth instructional programs, camps and leagues.
  • Develop and monitor schedules, including but not limited to team sports, classes and camps.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate program staff, sports officials, instructors, coaches, league support staff and volunteers.
  • Plan and lead seasonal staff and sports officials and coaches training.
  • Conduct program visits to observe staff techniques and evaluate staff and program effectiveness.
  • Assist with the development of program budgets and monitor expenditures and revenue.
  • Research, purchase, organize, distribute and maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program personnel, other MSCR staff, the public and other providers and organizations in the community.
  • Design and create flyers and promotional materials for programs and events, and work with Marketing Specialist to promote programs.
  • Track participation statistics, maintain necessary records, develop and submit required reports.
  • Monitor and approve employee payroll.
  • Make program specific presentations to MSCR, MMSD and other community organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Hours/week:

  • 40 hours per week

Work hours:

  • Flexible work schedule may include Monday - Friday: between 8:00am - 5:30pm
  • Some evenings and weekends as assigned by supervisor

Salary: $48,422.40 - $67,558.40

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in recreation, physical education, sports management or related field, and a minimum of three years’ experience coordinating, implementing and supervising recreation leagues/classes/programs, supervising staff and volunteers, leading sports programming; or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks, work under tight deadlines, and use effective time management.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse clientele and staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work towards improving one’s own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations in one’s skills and expertise and having the desire to learn in these areas.
  • Proficiency in Google docs, Microsoft Office and scheduling software.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twenty to fifty pounds.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment (personal computer, phone, fax, copier).

  • Tasks are regularly performed in safe and comfortable surroundings without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
