SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Food Service Coordinator is responsible for preparing and serving resident meals; supervision of the operation and maintenance of all kitchen equipment; supervision of resident chores in the kitchen and dining room.  Responsible for maintaining the kitchen, dining room and food storage areas to be in compliance with current Oregon Health Department standards.  Also supervise volunteers assigned to the kitchen or food storage areas.  Deal professionally and appropriately with program participants and donors, plan daily meals, maintain records, and prepare food for regular meals and special events.  Any special or unusual concern is to be brought to the immediate attention of the supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None – Potentially Volunteers on Occasion in kitchen, dining, and food storage areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Maintain ongoing professional relationships in all interpersonal contacts and relay all pertinent information concerning program participants to appropriate staff members.
  2. Daily involvement of impersonal and professionally sensitive matters which require maintaining absolute confidentiality with participants.
  3. Keep track of necessary kitchen and dining room operational and cleaning supplies.
  4. Provide breakfast food for Graveyard shift to set out for residents.
  5. Prepare lunch and evening meals.
  6. Prepare and track food boxes when necessary.
  7. Provide food options that can be utilized by staff for weekend meals.
  8. Dispose of Expired foods.
  9. Assist in managing food program participation from churches, service clubs, businesses, and individuals.
  10. Maintain the rule that no food, supplies, or material will be distributed outside the facility without prior approval from Administration.
  11. Uses strength-based perspective in all interactions with program participants and staff.
  12. Assist in providing food for special events, such as birthdays, meetings, tours, etc.
  13. Supervise food program volunteers during scheduled work shifts.
  14. Develop a Weekly Food Plan as needed.
  15. Maintain food inventories.
  16. Must obtain Multnomah County Food Handler’s Certificate and keep certificate current.
  17. Assist in providing confidentiality and privacy training for staff and volunteers that help in the kitchen.
  18. Attend all staff meetings as assigned.
  19. Relay all pertinent concerns about residents to supervisor, Director, or appropriate advocate.
  20. Manage daily food donations by pickup and delivery, keeping a log of their receipt.
  21. Assist in completion of all Oregon Food Bank and Oregon Department of Education inventory and reporting requirements. Including weekly ordering from OFB, record keeping, daily and monthly reports; as well as yearly training for ODE as needed.
  22. Maintain facility and program compliance in accordance with Oregon Food Bank Agency and Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Program Agreements with The Salvation Army West women’s and Children’s Shelter, and Multnomah County Health Standards.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: A minimum of one year’s experience as a cook in either a business or social services setting.  The individual must obtain yearly certification in first aid, CPR, and a Multnomah County Food Handler’s Card.  Drivers License.

Considered: Experience in cooking on an institutional scale helpful, but not required.

  • Must adhere to all Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Must maintain the integrity of confidential communications or activities.
  • Must maintain professional, courteous, and cooperative manner with all community partners, TSA staff, personnel, program participants, and outside contacts and demonstrate respect and a positive attitude toward them at all times.
  • Must be a team player, take initiative and be flexible in assisting others and to the best of the employee’s ability, ensure accurate and timely work objectives.

ORGANIZATION SKILLS:  Must maintain an organized work area, files, etc. contributing to the efficiency and accuracy of work within the assigned workday and avoiding unnecessary overtime. Must Keep Dry and Wet Stocks up to Date. Must maintain the kitchen area in a sanitary way.

RESPONSIBILITY: Work is done under general supervision in accordance with general procedures or policies. Will have some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment. Decisions and actions are subject to prior approval in unusual cases by the Director or Shelter Supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. (usually file boxes)
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of standardized but moderately complex procedures and operations requiring training and experience to be successful.
  • Strong computer skills for internal digital systems
  • Ability to function with limited direct oversight and/or with limited remote training.
  • Organizes projects, sets priorities, calculates, catalogues, inspects, analyzes, plans, comprehends, and cooperates with others, etc.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests and demands for the Shelter.
  • High level of problem-solving skills to complete the day’s challenges.
  • High level of patience.
  • Ability to function and work in a stressful environment.
  • A genuine concern for survivors of domestic violence and their children.
  • This position has access to confidential and private information; it is essential that these qualities are observed. Crisis intervention and non-violent mediation skills a plus.

  • Utilize Microsoft Office 2010 or later Software.
  • Answer and Telephone system.
  • Use Networked computers and printers.
  • Use a Photo Copier and Scanner.
  • Motor vehicle Experience as needed.
