This is a full time, year round, 260 work days position.

SUMMARY:

The person in this position will perform general grounds work including but not
limited to mowing, weeding, trimming, cleanup, street/parking lot sweeping, tree and shrub
trimming. Provide care, improvement and preventative maintenance of assigned district
grounds.  Keeping the district grounds in a condition of excellence under the supervision
of the Director of Maintenance and Operations.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following but not limited to:

  • Perform grounds work including but not limited to turf repair, weeding, tree and shrub trimming, clean up and street/parking lot sweeping
  • Operate and maintain mowing equipment, tractors, trimmers, edgers, and other grounds equipment
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields for games and meets before and after events
  • Clean grounds equipment and perform routine service
  • Make daily inspections of vehicle assigned to drive
  • Maintain necessary paperwork
  • Proficient in the following areas (but not limited to):
  • LAWNS: Mow, trim, edge, sweep (power and manual) thatch, cut and roll sod, insect control, fertilize and water
  • GARDEN AREAS: Weed, mulch, weed control with sprays, fertilize, thin, prune, bark application and water
  • TREES AND SHRUBS: Prume, trim, weed control, fertilize, new plantings, and water
  • PLAY AREAS AND OTHER ASSIGNMENTS: Seasonal care and improvements, clean catch basins, repair drain lines, smooth and grade terrain, brush and stone removal, dead or down tree removal, fence installation, fence and gate repair, playground equipment repair, maintenance of irrigation systems
  • Perform snow removal on driveways, walkways, parking lots and apply sand and ice control chemicals
  • Report problem areas and safety hazards in or on school facilities
  • Obtain and maintain all licenses and certifications necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities
  • Comply with all safety rules and regulations of the district and regulatory agencies
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student and personnel information
  • Move equipment and materials within the District
  • Make responsible decisions in the absence of the Director of Maintenance and Operations
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Director or his designee

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Washington State Drivers License
  • Valid First Aid/CPR card or the ability to acquire within 6 months
  • Pesticide License or the ability to acquire within 6 months
  • Backflow Certification or the ability to acquire within 6 months

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Previous knowledge and experience in the field of grounds keeping and athletic field maintenance.
  • Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to problem solve
  • Ability to lift and move more than 100 pounds.
  • Physical ability and willingness to perform work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate efficiently and safely, hand tools and motorized equipment such as weed burners, power edgers, sprayers, gas mowers, ditch diggers, tractors and related implements, fertilizer spreaders, grass seeders, chain saw, concrete mixer, dump truck, truck and trailer, pickups, welders, etc.
  • Ability to read city road maps in relation to addresses.
  • Ability to communicate proactively. Ability to work independently as well as under the direction of others.
  • Ability to be an effective team player. Ability to remain flexible in working with change in priorities.
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills and accommodate a changing work environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff/students and vendors.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of District requirements and Board policies.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of the ability to use hand tools, power tools, power equipment and the ability to operate vehicles and tractors.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports.
  • Ability to clearly present instructions to co-workers if needed.
  • Ability to speak effectively to administration, staff, students and vendors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Must be able to calculate the application rates for fertilizers and pesticides. Ability to calculate figures and amounts, such as
discounts, proportions, percentages, volume, ratios, and application rates and apply other
concepts of basic mathematics.


REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Desired characteristics include: flexibility; confidentiality, ability to express ideas clearly and understand concepts being discussed; ability to learn new ideas and skills; knowledge of current approaches to teaching and a willingness to model behavior deemed appropriate by the school district and community.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands to handle, feel or operate machines, objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch and bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and occasionally climb ladders. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, such as supplies, tools, and loading/unloading trucks. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this position the employee regularly works outdoors. The employee will work with or near moving mechanical equipment, and will work with general grounds keeping products such as herbicides, snow and ice melting products, degreasers and some aerosol sprays. While performing the duties of this position, the employee occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints. Must also be able to interact with District staff, students and outside vendors.
