ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The SoR Facilitator is responsible for leading the transformation of literacy practices with school coaches and administrators to build literacy infrastructure at the classroom, school, and district level. Specifically, the SoR Facilitator will work closely with systems and school-level leaders, literacy coaches, teachers, and other instructional staff to design and execute a plan to realize the Science of Teaching Reading is realized across the system including assessment, tiered instruction, intervention, professional development, and data. As a continuation of the district partnership with the Rolling Center, the SoR Facilitator will lead the implementation of evidence-based practices into classroom instruction and assessment through teacher training, modeling, and consultation. The SoR Facilitator in partnership with school staff, will create opportunities that will significantly enhance teachers’ knowledge and capacity and positively impact children’s literacy outcomes. The SoR Facilitator will actively interact with principals, program developers, literacy coaches, teachers, and paraprofessionals to accomplish this goal. This is a one year grant-funded position. If selected for the role, current MCS instructional staff with a satisfactory evaluation, would be offered a 2023-24 contract equivalent to their current position.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Content Support:
- Serve as facilitator (i.e., trainer, coach/mentor and consultant) for the faculty and staff at assigned schools.
- Assist the leadership for literacy at the school and district level in formulating their professional development goals to ensure that language and literacy instruction is research-based and effective.
- Deliver content knowledge about language and literacy through staff-wide and grade-level training; data-focused professional learning communities; and needs-based modeling and observations.
- Serve as expert teacher of early literacy/language development to model effective strategies for classroom teachers in K through third grade.
- Guide individual and systemic reflection on existing instructional routines and expectations through the lens of current Science of Reading research.
- Support literacy coaches and teachers at assigned sites to implement explicit and systematic instruction base on the Science of Reading.
- Establish positive relationships with teachers, coaches, and administrators that allow for open communication about the challenges and successes inherent to changing mindsets and practices.
- Contribute to the development of curriculum materials, resources, and process.
- Establish timelines and priorities for teacher training and consultation for assigned sites in collaboration with the team.
- Stay abreast of federal, state, and LEA mandates, policies, and procedures regarding literacy education, early childhood education, and special education.
- Actively seek new information as it becomes available to remain informed of the most current scientifically based literacy research.
- Participate in evaluation of Marietta City Schools resources and processes as needed.
Assessment:
- Assist in data collection for progress monitoring and needs assessments
- Deliver training sessions on interpreting student and teacher data to inform instruction, particularly progress monitoring data
- Serve as liaison between the Office of Academic Achievement, assigned schools, and external partners as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Master’s Degree in Special Education, Speech Language Pathology, Early Childhood Education, Reading, or a related field - Required
Experience:
- Have any combination of education and experience equivalent to two or more years of college and experience in general secretarial and clerical work
- Have training in at least one structured literacy program (e.g., TTT, OG, LETRS, Wilson) - Highly Preferred
- Have experience in K-3rd educational programs and/or programs for language and literacy required
- Have school-based teacher training and coaching experience - Desired
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is almost continuously required to sit, and talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to walk and stand. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and continuously will repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion many times as in typing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment. However, the noise level can vary depending upon daily activity but will still remain within the acceptable noise level range. The employee continuously is interacting with the public, staff and students. The employee frequently will be required to meet multiple demands from several people.
