What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vice Dean for Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease position at Marshall University?
The SOM wishes to establish a Vice Dean for Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease to enhance and provide leadership for development and all personnel actions of a newly created Marshall Center for Adiposity- Based Chronic Disease. Duties will include overall responsibility for creating a strategic plan for interdisciplinary Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease prevention, treatment, translational, clinical, epidemiological, and implementation science research and education with a primary mission of reducing the incidence and impact of Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease in West Virginia.
Position Description
Reporting to the Dean of the SOM and working closely with relevant University leadership and clinical partners, this position will define the concrete goals and objectives of the Center of Excellence to build multidisciplinary teams to develop value for students, patients, and the community.
Specific responsibilities include:
Patient Care
Oversee the development of comprehensive multispecialty outpatient services for the treatment of childhood and adult Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease:
endocrine, pulmonary, and other relevant specialists to provide a comprehensive approach
to the medical management of obesity;
Research
Coordinate basic, clinical and community population research with the aim to devise improved
understanding of Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease, its underlying mechanisms, and formulate novel interventional approaches to diagnosis and management:
Chronic Disease-related diseases, particularly diabetes;
Work with existing institutional partners to create a variety of educational resources and curricula
focusing on Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease diagnostic evaluation and care;
Community Service

communities including rural communities, minorities, and children.

- Medical weight management clinics will combine expertise of physicians, psychologists,
endocrine, pulmonary, and other relevant specialists to provide a comprehensive approach
to the medical management of obesity;
- Develop a program to include on-site and remote medical monitoring, lifestyle modification
- Work to develop a plan to mitigate the devastating economic costs of obesity on West Virginia’s economy.
Research
Coordinate basic, clinical and community population research with the aim to devise improved
understanding of Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease, its underlying mechanisms, and formulate novel interventional approaches to diagnosis and management:
- Create an effective and innovative platform for idea generation and pathways from bench to
- Identify research themes incorporating existing strengths and resources fostering cross-campus
Chronic Disease-related diseases, particularly diabetes;
- Target areas to include early life obesity, gestational obesity, community research, at risk
- Development of proposals for external funding to ensure sustainability of the Center
Work with existing institutional partners to create a variety of educational resources and curricula
focusing on Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease diagnostic evaluation and care;
- Development of an Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease medicine fellowship program;
- Organize an annual CME-based treatment conference and workshop for primary care providers to disseminate new therapies for evaluation and management of Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease;
- Explore educational efforts across the care spectrum including a bariatric surgery residency and

Education
- Doctoral Degree
Experience
- Administrative academic and clinical experience
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible work experience in education and health care
- Possess role model excellence in attitude, compassion, professionalism, and personal behavior
- Strong collaborative, organizational, and communication skills
- National/International reputation in research and clinical management
Preferred Qualifications
