MDIBL is seeking a Research Assistant I to work in the laboratory of Dr Emily Spaulding.
The Spaulding laboratory uses C. elegans to study how biomolecular condensation contributes to cell organization in neurons.
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Research Assistant I, preferably with lab experience in C. elegans research and/or neuroscience.
The Research Assistant will use CRISPR/Cas9 genetic engineering, advanced imaging techniques, and molecular biology to uncover functions of biomolecular condensation in neurons and determine how its disruption leads to neuronal dysfunction.
Responsibilities:
· C. elegans strain maintenance; preparation of commonly used lab reagents; ordering lab equipment and supplies; maintaining and cleaning lab equipment.
· Under the direction of senior lab staff, creation of new C. elegans strains including helping with the design of CRISPR editing strategies, microinjection, and genotyping.
· Works with lab team to modify and refine techniques and procedures to meet research objectives and troubleshoot new protocols. Manages multiple, concurrent projects or a multi-faceted project. Conducts a systematic and objective inquiry including experimental design, data collection and analysis.
· Clearly and concisely conveys information verbally and in written form; effectively presents ideas. Presents research results and summaries; adheres to reporting requirements of research project(s).
· Helps to train and mentor students and new lab personnel.

Preferred skills and experiences:
· C. elegans husbandry, light and confocal microscopy, PCR, and western blotting, Experience with CRISPR/Cas-9 genetic editing will be an advantage. Experience with microinjection and a willingness to perfect this technique would also be highly desired.
· The candidate should be diligent, able to work both independently and in a team environment, acquire new skills rapidly, and have versatility in a laboratory setting.
· Effective problem solving, interpersonal, and mentoring skills.
