As a member of the Finance team, the Insurance and Medicaid Specialist will verify benefits, obtain authorizations to provide service, file claims with insurance companies, post insurance payments to client accounts, review EOB’s for accuracy, follow-up on unpaid or delayed claims, and send monthly statements to clients. This position will impact a rapidly growing organization and is critical to the timely and accurate processing of all financial information
The MDS Insurance Billing Specialist will report directly to the Financial Administrator.
Duties Include but are not limited to:
- Verify insurance benefits and communicate information to client families, Department Directors, and Client Relations.
- Secure and maintain authorizations to provide services and communicate information to client families and department directors.
- Maintain accurate tracking method for authorizations and incoming clients.
- Weekly billing of all insurance claims including review of billing report to ensure accuracy.
- Posting of all insurance payments and accurate reporting on individual client spreadsheets.
- Timely research/follow-up on unpaid, underpaid, or delayed claims.
- Prepare and send monthly statements to clients.
- Research and resolve insurance/client overpayments.
- Answer all client inquiries regarding their insurance benefits and their financial obligation.
- Maintenance of month-to-date and year-to-date billing and receivable spreadsheets.
- Remain up-to-date with ever changing insurance coding and billing requirements.
- Implementation of new coding and billing requirements.
- Continuous research of billable codes and working knowledge of codes acceptable to different insurance plans.
- Develop/maintain relationships with employees at insurance and utilization management companies.
- Participate in scheduled finance meetings.
The MDS Insurance Billing Specialist must possess the following characteristics:
- Current knowledge of medical coding (ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, DSM-5, HCPCS) behavioral health a definite plus
* Medicaid billing billing especially mental health
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Knowledge of basic human anatomy.
- Ability to interpret and code from clinician’s reports.
- Experience in mental health billing for developmentally disabled a definite plus.
- Experience with account receivable and collections.
- Ability to conduct research to resolve coding/billing questions.
- Ability to read and interpret insurance certificates of coverage and explanations of benefits.
- Strong PC skills, including proficiency in Excel and Word.

Education Requirements
- Minimum High School Diploma
- Minimum 5 years effective medical billing and collections
- Medical billing schooling a plus
