MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center - Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Outpatient Clinic. Become a member of our progressive, multidisciplinary treatment program. Along with our devoted physicians and nurses, we have a dedicated staff comprising of Social Workers, Art Therapist, Child Life Specialists and Clinical Nurse Coordinator. We are proud to offer an Adolescent and Young Adult cancer program – the first of its kind in our region, Integrative Medicine program and Long-Term Survivor program. Our patient population consists of children and young adults with cancer or hematological disorders, as well as pediatric liver and bowel transplant recipients.

Job Summary

The professional nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive care in an ambulatory setting for patients in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. . Responsibilities include assessment of physical and psychosocial needs, patient education, and the administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products along with other infusion therapies. The nurse evaluates the patient’s response to interventions and implements appropriate changes and also assist in symptom management, coordination of internal and external resources, triaging unexpected patient visits and facilitating communication between all members of the health care team. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Schedule

Monday through Friday Days, 4 Days per week

Qualifications

    Education/Training: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor’s degree or higher in Nursing preferred

    Experience: Minimum of two years experience in Pediatric care, Pediatric Oncology background a plus; ambulatory care e

    License/Certification/Registration: Experience preferred. Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Nurse; APHON CPHON certification preferred. Chemotherapy certification required within 3 months of hire.

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Excellent phlebotomy skills, Experience with electronic medical record documentation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment of a designated patient population’s physical, psychosocial and educational needs. Identifies goals, and evaluates the patient’s response to interventions.

  • Provides the patient and family/significant other with information (oral, written, or audio-visual) regarding diagnosis treatment, potential side effects, symptom management, and resources available within and outside M.G.U.H. This may be face-to-face or via telephone.

  • Administers chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and blood products according to policy and procedure. Obtains blood samples from Central Venous Access devices according to policy and procedure.

  • Provides psychosocial support to patient/family/significant other throughout their care experience. The nurse identifies and coordinates resources for the patient. i.e. Counseling services, support groups, etc.

  • Supports biomedical research at the Lombardi Cancer Research Center through specimen collection, patient education and continuous review of current research and new technologies.

  • Contributes to his/her own professional growth and development through attendance at national and/or regional conferences, reading and sharing current literature, and identifying knowledge or skill needs.

  • Triages patients who “walk-in’ to the outpatient department. Identifies and prioritizes needs, initiates appropriate treatment(s), and communicates with the clinical fellow, Attending Physician and if applicable, Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all-inclusive.
