JOB DESCRIPTION

General Summary of Position
Coordinates movement disorder program of the Department of Neurology. Facilitates the operational management and administration of those activities which promote the delivery of safe, efficient and therapeutically effective care to an ambulatory population. Provides direct and indirect patient care utilizing the nursing process to assist with patient care for the movement disorder program, under the supervision of the attending physicians. Provides patient and family education, facilitates QA/QI activities, in-service for nursing and non-nursing personnel, and assists with research protocols as indicated.


Minimum Qualifications
Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required and
  • Master's degree in Nursing preferred and
  • CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. required
  • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience

  • 3-4 years Patient care experience, preferably in neurology (nursing), involving supervising nursing staff and designing, implementing and monitoring policies and procedures relating to ambulatory care. required

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Current R.N. licensure in the District of Columbia and Virginia. Upon Hire required and
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Requires and experienced nurse, familiar with outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Knowledge and experience with a variety of neurological disorders, with an emphasis on Epilepsy patients, both adult and pediatric.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments used to administer patient care.
  • Skilled in the application and modification of the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to facilitate communication and treatment between physicians, ancillary staff, and patients.
  • Strong personal computer and word processing skills.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Coordinates and evaluates day to day patient care related operations of the program.
  • Coordinates and facilitates functions of a variety of health care specialists in the outpatient department.
  • Provides education to nursing personnel, GUH and local communities by offering in-service training for general nursing personnel concerning epilepsy. Offers continuous in-service training for nursing staff. Offers educational material and training for GUH personnel and for local community participants.
  • Provides clinical expertise to staff, medical and nursing students, and patients.
  • Coordinates with and works with Nurse Manager to deliver patient outpatient services in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.
  • Collaborates in the development of principles of patient care while maintaining communication with appropriate allied services and agencies. Promptly requests consults from other services when indicated. Makes referrals to appropriate agencies and/or support systems to facilitate patient well-being. Works with nursing administration and/or nursing service to facilitate and improve patient care. Serves as liaison for the departments program by attending assigned meetings as a representative of the department.
  • Provides patient care for patients under the supervision of the attending physician. Participates in daily AM rounds. Reviews discharge orders and provide patients and families with education and instructions for post op care. Documents individualized nursing care for inpatients. Provides case management with approved discharge planning for individuals.
  • Provides patient care for patients in the clinics under the supervision of attending physicians. Assists physicians with patient's history. Performs general and specialized nursing care activities. Documents individualized nursing care for outpatients. Provides educational materials and instruction for patients and families regarding the diagnosis, treatment options and side effects, and prognosis.
  • Provides patient care via telephone for patients in the program under supervision of attending physicians. Triages calls and coordinates with medical staff and/or other resource to ensure appropriate care. Returns phone calls the day they are received, obtains accurate information regarding patient's seizure control or medication toxicity. Refills prescriptions under attending physician's supervision. Documents phone calls and notifies attending physician of pertinent information.
  • Identifies QA/AI indicators for service and participates in data collection and analysis related to indicators. Consults with appropriate medical staff to identify and reinforce issues related to modification in practice and standards of care.
  • Develops teaching aids and prepares individualized patient care plans.
  • Assists physicians with various research protocols by identifying candidates for research studies and assisting research coordinators.
  • Coordinates physicians and program hospital staff, to facilitate inpatient and outpatient care and compliance with patient/family-centered care standards.
  • Follows up with patients who have recently undergone surgery for epilepsy and sees patients daily post-operatively, under the supervision of attending physicians, to ensure appropriate follow-up, educational materials, discharge plans, etc.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
