What are the responsibilities and job description for the Stress Analysis Engineer, Senior position at Meggitt PLC?
North Hollywood, CA, United States, 91605
Meggitt is a global engineering group specializing in extreme environment products and smart sub-systems for aerospace, defense and energy markets. We employ over 10,000 people across manufacturing facilities in Asia, Europe, North America, with regional bases in India and the Middle East.
The Senior Stress Analysis Engineer is part of the Engineering Analyses & Simulations (EAS) group, this position is responsible for thermal and structural/stress analysis of high-performance flow control valves and actuation systems (pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric). These precision valve assemblies are designed for demanding aerospace applications.
- Develop high-fidelity FEA models of new and existing valve assemblies and perform static and dynamic/vibration analyses under thermal and mechanical loads, using ANSYS Workbench or ANSYS Classic.
- Perform LCF and HCF life analyses on components of valve assemblies, demonstrating compliance with design life requirements under a variety of operating conditions.
- Use classical stress analysis methods and simplified solution models for preliminary evaluation and/or sizing of valve bodies and actuation system hardware for given thermal and mechanical loads.
- Perform above-stated analyses in support of New Product Introductions (NPI), nonconforming production units, product cost/weight optimization studies, qualification testing, and investigation of field failures.
- Prepare professional thermal & structural analysis reports and presentations in support of product design reviews (e.g., PDRs, CDRs) and FAA/EASA certification.
- Avidly contribute to the development and documentation of engineering analysis standard procedures & in-house productivity programs/tools for use by all members of the EAS group. Support other organizational initiatives and activities as required.
- As an Integrated Product Team member, provide timely input to the design process to minimize costly design-analysis iterations.
- Work effectively with a team of outsourced stress engineers, providing guidance and competent technical oversight as they perform above-stated analyses in support of some projects.
- Minimum Bachelor Degree in mechanical, civil/structural, or aerospace engineering from an ABET accredited university; preferred Master's degree
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on structural/stress analysis experience in relevant settings (e.g., fluid flow control & actuation systems, aero-engine externals or core components, or ground power systems).
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals, such as engineering mechanics, classical stress analysis methods, basic machine design principles, heat transfer, materials & processes, and manufacturing methods.
- Prior hands-on experience with thermal and structural analysis of mechanical assemblies in ANSYS Workbench, ANSYS Classic, or other well-known commercial FEA softwareK
- Desirable (but not required): Knowledge of computational fluid dynamics and ability to perform CFD analysis using ANSYS CFX or Fluent.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Other Essential Skills: attention to detail, effective multi-tasking, and creative problem-solving.
