Job Summary
Environmental Technicians maintain a clean and sanitary environment by utilizing all available resources effectively and efficiently. Services provided includes sanitation of all areas of the Hospital including off-premise buildings, trash and bio-hazard waste removal, moving beds and furniture as requested, keeping dispensers supplied with toilet tissue, soap, paper towels, trash bags, etc. Services will be consistent with the mission and philosophy of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center. Provides these services to all customers regardless of age (from birth to maturity), sex or national origin.
Qualifications
Education:
High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
Experience:
Prefer six months of previous or related work experience, but not required.

Responsibilities For:
Performing all assigned tasks in a professional manner as to reflect the highest integrity of the department. Tasks include high dusting, bed cleaning, furniture cleaning, emptying and sanitizing wastebaskets, bathroom cleaning, dry mopping, wet mopping and burnishing tile floors, vacuuming and spot cleaning carpets, performing project work such as cleaning windows, window blinds and ledges, cleaning lights, cleaning vents, washing walls, cleaning sink drains, damp wiping paper towel dispensers, cleaning soap dispensers etc., and keeping cart and equipment clean. Performs routine cleaning of patient rooms, nursing units, offices, clinical areas, waiting areas, lobbies, lounges, rest rooms, corridors, elevators and stairways in a clean, neat and sanitary manner. Completes work assignments in a timely manner. Utilizes the appropriate chemicals and supplies according to procedure. Uses and maintains equipment properly. Transports trash and hazardous waste to appropriate disposal area. Maintains patient confidentiality. Maintains age specific safety precautions. Utilizes Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center's 5-step customer service plan when dealing with patients, visitors, and co-workers. Follows all infection control practices including hand washing, standard precautions and isolation precautions. Environmental Technicians will follow the policies and procedures of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center as well as Facility Services Department policies and procedures at all times.
Physical Demands:
This position requires standing and walking most of the day. It also requires the ability to kneel, crouch, turn and twist, stoop, bend, reach, pull, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds. It is the responsibility of the employee to get help whenever something is too heavy for one person to safely lift. This position requires good vision and hearing, with or without corrective devices.
Special demands:
Ability to work independently without more than normal supervision. Knowledge and observance of safety precautions. Works day, evening or night shift as assigned. The employee is frequently exposed to chemicals, fumes, and bio-hazard waste, occasionally is exposed to airborne particles, the need for personal protective equipment other than gloves, noise levels of the vacuum cleaners, and outside weather conditions, and rarely to electrical shock. 1. Practices Infection Control Policies of Memorial Hospital
and Health Care Center (Ongoing)
- Washes hands frequently using the proper hand washing technique.
- Wears personal protective equipment when required.
- Double red bags all bio-hazard trash.
- Sanitizes all bottles and mop handles used in isolation rooms.
- Sanitizes in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, sanitizing sinks/restrooms last.
2. Follows safety guidelines at all times (Ongoing)
- Uses proper body mechanics when lifting.
- Uses wet floor signs when wet mopping.
- Avoids leaving floors too wet - wrings wet mop tightly before wet mopping.
- Knows location of MSDS and follows precautions when using chemicals.
- Uses correct chemicals.
- Demonstrates age-specific competency by keeping chemicals locked inside janitor cart when cart is not in sight.
- Avoids running equipment over cords.
- Unplugs equipment by grasping plug and not by pulling cord.
- Avoids stretching cords across corridors.
- Does not leave equipment plugged in unattended.
- Unplugs equipment before cleaning it.
- Uses safety ladder when cleaning lights, changing cubicle curtains, etc.
- Uses bed controls to adjust bed for cleaning.
3. Routinely cleans all areas of the Hospital as well as off-premise buildings (65%)
- High dusts after each dismissal in patient rooms and as instructed in other areas.
- Cleans beds/cots thoroughly - mattress, springs, headboard, footboard, rails, etc.
- Sanitizes furniture and shampoos as needed. Spot cleans upholstered furniture daily.
- Sanitizes wastebaskets.
- Cleans restrooms - including all fixtures, sinks, showers, tubs, and toilets.
- Removes cubicle curtains/shower curtains as needed and sends to Linen Services for laundering.
- Spot cleans walls as needed.
- Spot cleans carpet as needed
- Dry mops and wet mops floors - including moving furniture, beds, and mopping under sinks, counters, etc.
- Vacuums and edges as needed.
4. Removal and storage of regular trash and bio-hazard waste (15%)
- Removes all trash from area of responsibility daily.
- Does not allow trash bag on janitor cart to overfill.
- Puts bio-hazard waste in proper containers.
- Ties red bags and secures lid tightly when removing bio-waste containers.
- Places bio-hazard waste in proper storage area until removed from premises.
5. Performing project work and other duties as assigned (10%)
- Keeps window blinds and ledges dust free and window/door glass free of fingerprints.
- Keeps paper towel dispensers clean and refills as needed.
- Keeps soap dispensers clean and refills as needed.
- Refills toilet paper as needed.
- Keeps vents free of dust.
- Cleans light shades as needed.
- Dust rails as needed.
- Cleans baseboards as needed.
- Keeps picture frames on walls dusted and glass clean.
- Burnishes tile floors according to procedure.
- Volunteers to work non-standard hours during times of need.
- Helps others with their job duties when needed without being asked to do so.
- Willingness to assume leadership role, such as Team Leader duties when requested.
6. Keeps cart\equipment clean (5%)
- Cleans cart at the end of the shift.
- Removes all dirty rags and mops at the end of the shift and takes to Linen Services.
- Cleans vacuum cleaner daily (cord, casing, bags, and filters).
- Store equipment in proper place.
