Job Summary
The Medication Resource Center Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting patients with identifying programs and applying for those programs to reduce out- of- pocket drug costs for needy patients. The technician will meet patients and input information into an on-line resource database designed to assist with medication affordability. They will also communicate with provider offices for necessary paperwork to process applications. Technician coordinates scheduling of patients, data input, reporting, and follow-up with patients based on their needs.
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma (or equivalent) required
Completion of a recognized Pharmacy Technician training program or have national certification (CPHT)
Licensed Pharmacy Technician in the State of Indiana
Training:
2-3 weeks on the job training required
Experience:
One year of retail or hospital pharmacy experience preferred. Experience in a customer service role is preferred.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Technician must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in working with patients and providers. Technician must be able to work independently and be able to multi-task. Computer skills are needed to process applications appropriately. The technician works under the direction of a pharmacist and reports to the Pharmacy Clinical Manager.
Performance Requirements
Responsibility for:
The technician is expected to provide optimal patient care by recognizing differences in the drug therapy (i.e. drug, dose, & frequency) in pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
Technician is challenged to assist the patient in the timely and accurate assistance with medication affordability concerns. Questions involving medication use or therapeutics must be referred to the pharmacist. Good judgment and clear communication is required when other types of information is provided to the patient by the technician.
The technician will be required to work varying shifts and days to meet the needs of the department which operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Overtime may be required. The technician is expected to attend at least 75% of staff meetings and technician meetings.
Physical Demands:
Walks, sits, and stands intermittently. Minimal physical effort required. May occasionally include lifting items weighing 10-20 pounds and the use of a cart to transport loads which might weigh up to 50 pounds. Manual dexterity for handling various office equipment and computer data entry.
Special Demands:
Willingness to work with the realization that errors may have serious effects for patients. Ability to remain alert and concentrate on tasks for extended periods of time. Must be courteous and show patience and cooperation with patients as well as our customers which may include families, providers, and other health care personnel. Representative Functions

- The technician is responsible for communicating with patients and (75%) assisting with medication affordability using on-line resources such as Med-Data. The technician is responsible for collecting insurance and financial information, applies for any available assistance through drug manufacturers and disease specific foundations. The technician is responsible for following through on application, including obtaining paperwork from the provider, until the medication is received by the patient. The technician is expected to act in a professional manner and to provide exceptional patient service as directed by the core values of Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center.
- The technician tracks all information received via MedData (25%) software, runs reports as requested, updates data tracking spreadsheets as requested, orders needed supplies, schedules drug representatives, and requests copay cards as needed. The technician answers telephone calls promptly and in a polite and courteous manner.
- Other ongoing practices:
- The technician must display a complete understanding of how medications are procured from various sources when patients are in need. Demonstrates interpersonal skills to maintain effective communications with co-workers, other hospital employees, patients and visitors. Working knowledge of MHHCC and specific departmental policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws regarding pharmacy.
- The Technician must maintain general pharmacy knowledge, knowledge of medications, medication dosage forms, pharmaceutical calculations, and trade/generic names.
- The technician is challenged to assist in the training of new technicians and pharmacy students in medication affordability.
