The Assistant Dean of Students reports directly to the Dean of Students and is a member of the Dean of Students and College Programs teams. This is a full-time, 12-month position with an anticipated start date of July 7, 2024. The Assistant Dean should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication, advising, and problem-solving skills with a working knowledge of college student development, student conduct and student success trends. The Assistant Dean should possess proven experience and skills in engaging with a wide range of individuals, showing dedication to fostering community connections and cultivating an atmosphere of individual growth and unity. Through this position, the Assistant Dean supports the mission and goals of the College and the Office of the Dean of Students.
The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Dean of Students include but are not limited to the following:
Student Conduct/Honor System
- Advise Honor Council, the student-governed conduct process at Meredith College. Serve as resource for students, faculty and staff in providing information about the Honor System and integrity issues. Collaborate with Dean of Students on updating web site resources, maintaining Honor Council records, and preparing Honor System training and information for students, faculty and staff. Assist Honor Council with planning of Honor Code ceremonies. Organize and maintain Honor Council records, case logs and files
- Assist with review of College policies and procedures, including the Honor Code and other policies impacting students.
- Assist Dean of Students in providing education and information related to sexual violence and Title IX reporting and resources.
- Serve as a member of the College’s Bias Incident Response Team (BIRT) - taking lead when the incident directly impacts a student, or if a team member needs additional support with the DOS perspective.
Student Support, Success and Retention
- Assist and collaborate with campus partners in early intervention systems and strategies in identifying, contacting, and assisting students who are at-risk. Provide support to students with problem-solving and identifying campus resources for assistance. Assist office with sending notifications of student absences to faculty.
- Serve as resource and support for students in understanding and navigating College policies and processes. Assist students who have concerns and conflicts; provide mediation consultation and support.
- Provide support and assistance to students from diverse populations and backgrounds by connecting with them in their first semester and then continuing connections through programming in the first and second years. Example: Assisting with Summer Symposia event(s) for incoming first year students who identify as having multicultural backgrounds.
- Collaborate with campus partners such as the DEI Coordinator, FYE Co- Directors, Residence Life, and Student Leadership and Service staff to provide student- facing campus diversity dialogues and events that work in concert with faculty and staff educational opportunities.
- Serve on Care Assessment Team, Orientation Planning Committee, Incident Management Team, BIRT Team, Diversity Employee Collective, Disability Panel Committee, UndocuAlly Committee (Undocumented Student Support Committee) and other campus committees as assigned.
- Serve as an on-call administrator in responding to student crises and emergencies. Assist students who experience crises and refer to appropriate campus resources.
- Develop and coordinate a number of community building trainings for students in partnership with the DEI Coordinator.
- Advise Association of Meredith Commuters (AMC) and assist the organization with planning events for commuting students. Coordinate the commuter student orientation program as part of orientation weeks. Serve as a resource for commuting students who encounter challenges and barriers.
Administrative
- Complete annual report, continuous improvement assessment and reports, and participate in strategic planning and goal-setting.
- Serve in place of Dean of Students in her absence.
- Complete other duties as assigned, in consultation with Dean of Students.
- The Assistant Dean serves on the Dean of Students team along with the Co-Directors of First Year Experience, the Director of Residence Life, Director of the Counseling Center, and the Director of Student Health. The Assistant Dean of Students also collaborates with the DEI Coordinator to implement DEI initiatives.
Education and Experience:
- Position requires a Master’s degree or higher in higher education administration, student personnel, counseling or related field and at least 5 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in student conduct and crisis response is preferred.
Skills Needed:
- Extensive knowledge of best practices and trends in college student support, success and retention.
- Demonstrated experience with student conduct and accountability process.
- Demonstrated experience with and the ability to interact with diverse constituents with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. Preferred: experience in serving on a campus bias incident response team and/or CARE (students of concern) team.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to interact with a wide range of constituents (students, family members, faculty, and staff).
- Demonstrated experience in advising and mentoring students.
- Ability to work successfully as a leader and member of a team and/or committee.
- Ability to engage in complex problem-solving and to assist others with their own critical thinking and problem-solving.
Technological Skills:
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google suite (Google docs, Gmail, slides, sheets, forms).
- Familiarity with using Zoom.
- Familiarity with Ellucian’s Colleague preferred.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands:
- General office setting with moderate noise.
- Ability to climb stairs when elevator use is not available.
- Ability to occasionally lift 10-25 lbs.
